Muslim travel in Kazakhstan for Malaysians

Your family differs on how strict to be, and Kazakhstan does not ask you to decide yet.

Kazakhstan is a secular country with Muslim heritage, not a country organised around Muslim daily life. That suits a mixed-observance family, because nobody is pressed into a standard at the door. It also means you carry the food and prayer planning yourself.

What does a secular Muslim-heritage country look like?

Pew Research Center estimated Muslims at 56.4% of Kazakhstan’s population in 2010, a figure it later noted was understated against the 2009 census share of 70.2%2. So the heritage is real, and so is a wide range of practice.

On the street, you will see mosques in larger cities next to restaurants that serve alcohol. A word like “halal” on a menu may be sincere and still unverified.

What do Malaysians need to enter?

Malaysian passport holders have visa-free travel to Kazakhstan for up to 30 calendar days under Government Decree No. 838 of 23 December 20161. Rules change, so check the Malaysian foreign ministry before you fly.

How should you handle food?

Treat spoken halal as operator-declared until you see paper. Families usually settle on one of these rules before arrival:

  • Certificate only: accept only meals with a visible certificate from a recognised body.
  • Declared plus questions: accept operator-declared halal after asking about meat source and alcohol.
  • Pork-free and alcohol-free: choose seafood, vegetarian and plain grilled dishes, and ask about sauces.

Whichever rule you pick, send these questions before the tour, and get the replies in writing:

  • “Is the meat halal, and who supplies it?”
  • “Is alcohol used in any sauce or cooking?”
  • “Can the group’s meals be prepared without a shared grill?”

Our guide to what halal means on Central Asia tours shows how to read the answers, and the Central Asia assumptions guide lists what to verify.

Where do you pray?

Pray in your room before and after sightseeing, and ask your guide for the nearest mosque each morning. For a stop longer than a few hours, mark a prayer window beside it in the prayer-stop itinerary checklist.

Almaty is the usual first base. See Almaty for Muslim travellers for the city view.

Better options when

If you want a country where food is easy to verify for a first overseas trip, read choosing a first overseas holiday. If you want Silk Road mosques and madrasas, the sister guide to Central Asia may serve you better, and the full country and city guides show the options side by side.

Your next step

Fill in the dietary enquiry brief with your group’s rule, and send it with your first enquiry.

Common questions

Is Kazakhstan a Muslim country?

It is a secular state with a large Muslim heritage. Plenty of people identify as Muslim, but public life is not organised around religion the way it is in Malaysia. Expect restaurants that serve alcohol alongside halal dishes, and do not expect prayer calls to shape every neighbourhood.

Can I assume restaurant food is halal?

No. Halal is said aloud far more easily than it is shown on paper. Without a certificate you have an operator-declared claim at best, and at worst an unknown. Ask about the meat source, alcohol in sauces and whether the kitchen is shared, then decide by your own standard.

Is it easy to pray while sightseeing?

Plan for it rather than hoping. Mosques exist in the larger cities, but you should not count on a prayer room at every sight. Choose a hotel with a quiet corner, set the qibla on your phone, and pray in your room before and after sightseeing.

Is Kazakhstan a good first overseas trip?

It can be, if you travel with an operator who answers your meal questions in writing. For a first trip, you may find a country with an established certification system easier, because you can read the certificate yourself rather than rely on speech.
