Honeymoon

Choosing a halal-friendly honeymoon in Asia

You want privacy and a sensible budget, but every destination seems to ask you to pick one.

If privacy matters most, look at a Maldives resort island or a private villa in Bali. If meal ease matters most, Bali and the Maldives are the simplest, and Taiwan or Korea come next. If you want a city honeymoon and are happy to plan carefully, Japan and Korea reward the effort. Match the place to your budget before you fall for a photo.

How do the five places compare?

The table uses one basis: how much privacy you can arrange, how easy it is to find food you trust, and how hard the budget is likely to be pressed. It does not quote prices, because they change by season.

DestinationPrivacy you can arrangeMeal easeBudget pressure
MaldivesHighest, on a resort islandSimple on the island, set by the resortHigh, since everything is on one island

What does each place need from you?

Maldives. Muslims were estimated at 98.4% of the population in 20109.

Tourists receive a visa on arrival1, and each traveller submits a free online declaration up to 96 hours before arrival2. Check the official page before you fly. Ask the resort what its meals include and whether alcohol is served in the restaurants.

Bali. Indonesia’s Muslim share was estimated at 88.1% in 201010, but that is a national figure, so ask about the area where you will stay.

Malaysians are visa-exempt for 30 days, counted from arrival as day one3; check that this has not changed. JAKIM recognises BPJPH as Indonesia’s halal authority8.

Ask each villa and restaurant what its own claim is. The Bali itinerary with parents is for families, but shows how to space prayer and meals.

Taiwan. Malaysians can enter visa-free for up to 30 days4. JAKIM recognises two Taiwanese certification bodies, THIDA and THCD7, so you have a name to look for on a certificate.

South Korea. JAKIM recognises two Korean bodies, KMF and KHA6. Check the current entry requirements for Malaysians on the official government page before you book. See our six-day Korea itinerary for a modest honeymoon couple.

Japan. Malaysians do not need a visa for a short stay of less than 90 days5. Check the official page before you fly.

JNTO warns that cooking sake and mirin are used in Japanese dishes, and that some miso contains alcohol11, so ask about sauces.

How do you set the budget?

Use three buckets, and decide which one you will protect.

  • Getting there: compare flights for your dates and your flexibility.
  • Where you sleep: privacy usually lives here, in a villa or a better room.
  • Everything else: meals, transport, activities and a reserve for the unexpected.

If privacy is your top need, spend in the second bucket and keep the third simple. If meal assurance is your top need, choose a city with more certificate-holders and a hotel close to them. Use the Muslim-tour inclusion comparator to compare quotes for a package.

What should you check before you commit?

When should you choose a different place?

If you are nervous about a first trip abroad, a destination where the language and food feel closer may calm your planning. Read choosing a first overseas holiday for a gentler start. For more topics like this, see families, couples and groups.

Common questions

Which destination is easiest for halal meals on a honeymoon?

Where Muslims form most of the population, such as Indonesia and the Maldives, meal choices tend to be simpler, though resorts still differ. In Taiwan and Korea you can find certified restaurants in larger cities, with checks needed. Japan is possible but needs the most planning around sauces and alcohol.

Which place gives the most privacy for modest couples?

Private villas and resort islands give the most control over who sees the pool and the beach. City trips give less privacy outdoors, but your room can still be private. Decide whether you want outdoor privacy or simply a quiet room and quiet meals, then choose.

How should we set a honeymoon budget when we do not know prices yet?

Split it into three buckets: getting there, where you sleep and everything else. Decide which one you will protect, then collect real quotes. This site does not publish prices, because they change. The tour comparator lets you put your own quotes side by side.

Should we choose a package or plan it ourselves?

A package can simplify meals and transfers, but it is only as good as what is written down. Ask for the halal claim state of each meal and the room and pool arrangements in writing. A self-planned trip suits couples who enjoy research and are comfortable checking venues.
