Travelling in Ramadan: pacing a trip while fasting
You want to travel in Ramadan and still keep the days light enough to fast.

Travelling in Ramadan works best when the day is built backward from iftar. Put sightseeing in the cooler morning, rest in the middle, keep the evening for a meal you have already planned, and treat sahur as something to arrange in advance, not hope for.
Is Ramadan a good time to travel?
It can be, if you plan for a slower pace. Whether you fast, and whether to travel at all while fasting, is your own decision and a question for your own ustaz or your state mufti office. Everything below helps you plan the days; none of it is a ruling.
Ramadan dates move from year to year and depend on moon sighting. One travel blog expects Ramadan 2027 to begin on Monday, 8 February 2027, with the date confirmed only after sighting by JAKIM (the Malaysian Islamic development department) and state authorities1. Treat this as an estimate and check the official announcement before you book flights.
What does a light fasting day look like?
Keep the day in three parts.
- Morning: after Fajr and sahur, one sight or walk that needs energy.
- Midday to afternoon: rest at the hotel, with Zohor and Asar prayed there.
- Late afternoon: a short, easy outing or none, so you are back near your iftar place for Maghrib.
Resist the urge to fill the gap. A fasting body needs rest more than an extra attraction. Our prayer-stop itinerary checklist helps you place Zohor, Asar and Maghrib around the quiet middle of the day.
How do I plan iftar when I am away from home?
Treat Maghrib as the fixed point and decide where you will break your fast before you leave the hotel in the morning. You have three options.
- Break your fast at the hotel, with a meal you have confirmed.
- Break your fast at a restaurant whose claim state you have checked.
- Carry dates, water and a snack, and sit down for a proper meal soon after.
Always keep something in your bag. A delayed train should not decide when you eat. For the restaurant option, the questions to ask a tour operator about halal meals and the dietary enquiry brief generator will help you phrase the request.
What should I ask hotels and attractions?
Send these before you travel.
- “Can the restaurant serve an early meal, or a box, for sahur?”
- “Is there a kettle, fridge or microwave in the room?”
- “Can breakfast be moved or packed for an early start?”
- “Will the restaurant stay open at the time we plan to break our fast?”
- “Does the attraction we want close early on certain days?”
The answers vary by place and by season, so do not assume. The private-stay requirements builder lets you list what the room should have.
What about travel days and transfers?
Make arrival and departure days the lightest. If a long transfer is unavoidable, schedule it for the morning and keep the rest of the day empty. Sitting in a vehicle while hungry and thirsty is harder than it looks.
How does Hari Raya fit in?
If your trip runs into the end of the month, plan the festive day separately. The guide to spending Hari Raya abroad covers prayer, food and family planning for that day.
Your next step
Write the three-part day for your first full day. Put iftar first on the page, then fit the morning and the rest around it. For other pacing cases, return to prayer and daily pacing.

Common questions
Should I travel at all while fasting?
That is a personal decision and, if you want a ruling on fasting while travelling, a question for your own ustaz or your state mufti office. This page covers the practical side only: how to keep days light, protect iftar and sahur, and agree with your family how each person will approach the trip.
Can I rely on an expected Ramadan date when I book?
Not fully. Dates are confirmed only after the moon is sighted by JAKIM (the Malaysian Islamic development department) and the state religious authorities, so any date you read in advance is an estimate. Book with as much flexibility as you can, and check the official announcement before paying for anything that cannot be changed.
How do I handle sahur in a hotel?
Ask in advance. Can the hotel provide an early meal or a box, is a kettle or fridge in the room, and can the restaurant open at the time you need? If the hotel cannot, plan to bring food that keeps. Confirm by message and keep the reply.
How should I plan the first and last day?
Keep arrival and departure days light. Travelling on a fasting day is tiring, and you may arrive just before iftar. Plan to eat near the hotel on the first evening, with no sightseeing, and keep the last morning free for packing and a calm sahur.
Can children and older parents join the fast on a trip?
Each person decides within their own practice and, if needed, with their scholar. Plan the days so that anyone who is not fasting can eat comfortably without feeling left out, and the fasting adults can rest. A shared evening iftar keeps the family together.
