Hari Raya abroad: plan prayer, food and family

You want the family together on Raya morning, even if the morning is in another country.

Raya morning abroad can be warm and quiet, or lonely and rushed. What decides it is three things you settle before you leave. Where will Eid prayer happen, what will you eat afterwards, and how will you keep home traditions alive from a distance?

When does Raya fall, and can you rely on the date?

Not until the moon is sighted. The 2027 federal schedule lists Hari Raya Puasa on 10 and 11 March 2027, marked subject to change pending moon sighting1. Hari Raya Qurban is listed on 17 May 2027, also subject to change2.

For Kumpulan B states, the 2027 school break is printed as 6 to 14 March3. Some families pick that week for a trip, so book changeable tickets and check the official announcement before you fly.

Where do we pray Eid prayer?

Find the mosque or Islamic centre before you choose the city, not after. Eid prayer is arranged by local communities, and visitors are not always expected. Your options, in the order to try:

  • A mosque or Islamic centre in the city, contacted by message or email.
  • A prayer space in a Muslim-friendly hotel (one set up with some Muslim needs in mind, not the same as halal-certified), if the hotel confirms it in writing.
  • Praying at your own hotel room with your family, if neither is possible.

Send a short message such as:

We are a Malaysian family visiting on [dates]. Will you hold Eid prayer, and are visitors welcome? Is there a women’s section, and when should we arrive?

Ask about the arrival window, not a clock time you assume.

Our prayer-stop itinerary checklist helps you note the answer beside each day.

What about food on Raya morning?

Decide your meal rule first, then plan the festive meal around it. Certified, Muslim-owned and pork-free venues give you different amounts of proof, as the guide on halal claim states explains.

Practical ideas:

  • Book a restaurant you can verify for the evening, and carry something small for breakfast.
  • Ask your hotel before you arrive if it can set aside early breakfast for guests coming back from prayer.
  • Keep one shared festive item in the suitcase if baggage rules allow, and check the airline’s food rules first.

Will shops and sights be closed?

Where Muslims are a small minority, Raya is usually a normal working day, so ordinary shops run as usual. The surprise is a local public holiday. Look up your destination’s own calendar, and avoid planning a long-awaited visit on a day it may close.

Allow a slower first morning. If you also fly that day, our guide to planning sightseeing around five daily prayers shows how to leave room for prayer and rest.

How do we keep family traditions going?

Plan them, so nobody feels left out.

  • Agree a family video call after Eid prayer.
  • Ask relatives to hold the open-house visits until you return, and say so early.
  • Bring duit raya envelopes in small notes from home, and let children give them to one another in the hotel room.
  • Photograph the baju raya together before you leave the room.

If the trip lands in Ramadan or just after, read travelling in Ramadan for pacing. If you have young children, see children, naps and prayer.

Your next step

Pick the destination, then send the mosque message before you book. If the answer is no, you still know your fallback. Go back to the prayer and daily pacing hub for the other checks.

Common questions

Can we pray Eid prayer in a country where Muslims are a small minority?

Usually yes in a larger city, because mosques and Islamic centres organise it for local Muslims. Smaller towns may not. Message the mosque or centre before you book, ask if visitors are welcome, and keep a plan for praying at your hotel if the answer is no.

Will restaurants and shops be open on Raya morning abroad?

Where Muslims are a small minority, Raya is usually an ordinary working day, so shops and restaurants run as usual. The risk is the opposite: a local public holiday can close small shops or fill a city. Check the destination's own holiday calendar, not the Malaysian one.

How do we handle Raya visiting traditions while travelling?

Agree before you leave who will be called, when, and how. Families can split it into a video call after Eid prayer and a visit round after you return. Telling relatives the plan early makes the trip feel like a choice, not an absence.

Is it better to travel just before or just after Raya?

It depends on your priority. Travelling after Raya keeps the family gatherings and the open-house season at home. Travelling before gives you quiet time but you may fast or prepare for Raya on the road. Pick the order that matches who you are travelling with.

Do we need to book Raya meals abroad in advance?

Yes for a festive meal you care about. Ask your hotel or a restaurant you can verify whether they can serve a meal after prayer, and check the claim state of the kitchen first. A simple plan, such as a picnic of food you carry, is also fine.
