Seoul for Muslim travellers: Itaewon or beyond
You are planning Seoul with family and must decide where to stay and eat.

Seoul is the easiest base for a Muslim trip to South Korea, and the choice is not only Itaewon. You decide between staying close to the mosque and its cluster of food or staying near the sights and travelling in for meals. This page lays out both options, with each food source labelled by claim state.
Who is Seoul for?
Seoul suits first-time visitors and families who like a compact city with an efficient subway and plenty to see. It suits you less if you want every meal to be certified without checking, because the claim states still differ from place to place.
Malaysia Airlines lists Seoul Incheon among its destinations from Kuala Lumpur1. Korea is one hour ahead of Malaysia2. Our South Korea guide covers entry steps and the food you must declare.
Itaewon or beyond: how do you decide?
Seoul Central Mosque is in Hannam-dong, Yongsan District, and opened in 19763. The Itaewon area around it is where a Seoul halal search usually begins.
| If you value | Stay in Itaewon | Stay elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Mosque nearby | Short ride or walk, check the route | Subway or taxi each time |
| Food to check | A cluster of places to ask about | Plan one Itaewon meal per day |
| Quiet nights | Ask for a back room; nightlife nearby | Calmer in business districts |
| Sights | A subway ride to most | Closer to your daily plan |
A family with older parents may choose Itaewon for fewer long trips. A young couple with a sightseeing list may prefer a central base and a subway to Itaewon for dinner. Neither is wrong. Pick the one that matches the day you actually plan.
What does each Seoul food source mean?
Use the claim states. Korea’s tourism body sorts Muslim-friendly restaurants into four categories, and the self-certified category means the Muslim owners certify the restaurant themselves4. JAKIM lists two Korean bodies, KMF in Seoul and KHA in Cheongju5. For reading certificates, see Korea halal certification.
- Certified restaurants: ask for the certificate and match the issuer to the list.
- Muslim-owned or self-certified: ask where the meat is bought.
- Pork-free restaurants: the category means no halal menu and no pork, and alcohol may be sold6. Ask about lard and shared grills.
- Street food and food courts: unknown. Choose fruit or packaged food.
- Convenience stores: read the label with a translation app. Plain fruit, rice and eggs are safe fallbacks.
- Hotel buffets: KTO warns that Muslim-friendly hotel buffets may serve dishes containing pork7. Ask first.
Where can you pray in Seoul?
The mosque is the anchor, and the hotel room is the default. Incheon Airport lists a Terminal 1 prayer room on the third floor near Gate 24, open 24 hours8. Another is in the West Transfer Lounge on the fourth floor, also open 24 hours9.
Between sights, return to the hotel for Zohor when you can, and keep an afternoon window free for Asar. Confirm the mosque’s visitor rules and women’s area before you plan around it. Set the qibla (the direction of the Kaabah in Makkah) on your phone.
Dress, customs and daily life
Dress for the season and remove shoes in homes. Public bathhouses are nude shared spaces, so read jjimjilbang and saunas before you go. Korea lists 112 for police and 119 for ambulance10.
Families, older parents and solo women
Plan one big activity a day, with rest after lunch. Solo women and women-only groups can use the subway and ride-hailing, with the hotel address saved in Korean. For teenagers, see Teenagers on a Muslim family holiday.
Ramadan and festive timing
Opening your fast needs a plan, since certified kitchens may not open when you need them. Ramadan and Hari Raya dates follow the moon sighting, so confirm with JAKIM before booking.
When would another place suit you better?
If you want a coast, read Busan for Muslim travellers; Jeju is covered in the country guide. If you are buying a package, send questions for a Seoul Muslim-tour quotation first.
How does Seoul fit a route?
Seoul works as a base for a short stay with one rest day built in. Compare offers with the meal-assurance comparison tool, and browse more cities in the country and city guides.

Common questions
Should I stay in Itaewon as a Muslim traveller?
Stay in Itaewon if the mosque and nearby food checks matter most to you. Stay elsewhere if sights and subway links matter more, and take the subway to Itaewon for meals. Itaewon has a nightlife side, so ask for a quiet room and check noise reviews.
Is everything in Itaewon halal?
No. Itaewon has a Muslim presence around the mosque, but each restaurant still has its own claim state. Some show certificates, some are Muslim-owned or self-certified, and some are Muslim-friendly or pork-free. Check each one with the questions in this guide.
How do I know if a Seoul restaurant is certified?
Ask for the certificate and look at the issuer, the expiry date and the branch. KMF and KHA are the two Korean bodies on JAKIM's list. A listing on a tourism site is a starting point only. Treat a restaurant with no certificate as declared, friendly or unknown.
Where can I pray in central Seoul?
Seoul Central Mosque is the anchor, and Incheon Airport has prayer rooms. Between sights, plan prayer at the hotel or ask for a quiet corner. Keep Zohor or Asar windows free in the afternoon, and check the mosque's visitor rules and women's area beforehand.
What can I eat from a Korean convenience store?
Read the ingredient label, using a translation app on your phone. Fruit, plain rice, plain nuts and eggs are the low-risk picks. Instant noodles, sausages, gelatin sweets and sauces may contain pork or alcohol. A packaged item without an issuer's mark is unknown.
Is a hotel buffet in Seoul safe for Muslims?
Not by default. The Korea Tourism Organization warns that hotel buffets labelled Muslim-friendly may serve dishes containing pork. Ask which dishes are cooked without pork or lard, and whether tools are shared. When the answer is vague, choose eggs, rice and fruit.
