How do I find the qibla direction?
You have just walked into a hotel room and need to know which way to face.
The qibla is the direction of the Kaabah in Makkah. You face it when you pray. It changes with your location, so you need to find it again in each new place.
How will I meet it on the trip?
In some places it is shown for you. Changi Airport, for example, says its prayer rooms have ablution areas and signage showing the qibla direction1. A hotel room, a tour coach or a restaurant corner usually has no marker, so you work it out yourself.
How do I find it in a hotel room?
- At check-in, ask the front desk which way the qibla points, and note it.
- Open a qibla app or compass, hold the phone flat, and step away from metal.
- Check twice, then note it against a fixed point such as the window or the bed.
- Tell the next person in the family so nobody repeats the search.
Use the private-stay requirements builder to list your room needs, and ask the hotel to confirm the arrangements in writing.
A tip for sightseeing days
Check the direction when you arrive at a prayer stop, because the layout of a room can face a different way than the building. The prayer-stop itinerary checklist helps you list each stop with its qibla and ablution notes.

Common questions
Is the qibla the same direction everywhere?
No. The qibla is the direction toward the Kaabah in Makkah, so it changes with where you stand. From Kuala Lumpur it points one way and from Tokyo another. That is why a direction you know at home cannot simply be reused in a hotel abroad.
Can I trust a qibla app on my phone?
Apps are useful, but phone compasses can be thrown off by metal, magnets or a case. Hold the phone flat, step away from large metal objects, and check the reading twice. Where possible, compare it with a marker in the room or ask the front desk.
What if I cannot find the direction at all?
Pray as best you can toward your best estimate, and ask your own ustaz or the state mufti office what applies when the direction is uncertain. This glossary explains the practical side only and does not give a ruling.
