How much space do I need to pray and make sujud?
There is no prayer room nearby, and you are looking at a corner of the departure hall.
Sujud, the prostration in solat, needs clear and clean floor for your forehead, hands and knees. On a trip that matters more than a formal prayer room, because the space you end up with may be a hotel room, an airport corner or a quiet edge of a park.
What makes a spot workable?
Use four checks:
- Clean: no wet patches, dirt or things you would rather not touch
- Clear: nobody will walk across your space, and there is room to prostrate
- Quiet: out of the main path, with no loud interruption
- Facing: you can work out the direction of the qibla (towards the Kaabah in Makkah, which you face to pray)
If a spot fails one check, move a few steps. Most problems are solved by choosing the edge of a room, not the middle.
What can I ask the hotel for?
Ask for the qibla direction, a prayer mat if they keep spare ones, and a space in the room with enough floor beside the bed. The private-stay requirements builder turns these into a message you can send before arrival.
A tip for the day
Pack a light mat and a pocket compass or an offline qibla app. Check the direction on your first morning, so you are not guessing in a hurry later. For anything fiqh-related, such as praying on a surface you are unsure about, ask your own ustaz.
Use the prayer-stop itinerary checklist to note which stops have a proper room and which need a backup. The guide on sightseeing around five daily prayers shows how to place them.

Common questions
Do I need a prayer mat to pray abroad?
A prayer mat is the simplest way to mark a clean spot, and a light one packs easily. If you have none, a clean cloth or large scarf can work for some people. Whether that satisfies your standard is something to ask your own ustaz.
Can I pray in an airport corner or a hotel room?
It can work if the floor is clean, nobody will walk across your space and you can work out the direction. Choose a quiet edge, not a thoroughfare. Where a proper prayer room exists, use it. For rules on where prayer is acceptable, ask your ustaz.
How do I know which way to face?
Use a compass or qibla app, and check against a sign in the hotel room or prayer room if one is posted. Do the check before the prayer window gets tight. Confirm the app against a known reference on the first day, since a phone can mislead near metal or in a lift.
