What visa on arrival means for you

You hear that a country gives a visa on arrival, and you wonder what to prepare.

Visa on arrival means the visa is issued to you at the airport or border after you land, not before you leave Malaysia. You go to a counter, show your documents and receive the visa there.

How will you meet it on the trip?

You will see it on destination pages and quotes. The Maldives is one example: Maldives Immigration states that foreign tourists receive a tourist visa on arrival without pre-approval1.

Nepal is another. Malaysian MOFA states that Nepal visas can be obtained at the Nepalese Embassy, normally within one working day, or on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu2. Rules and fees change, so check the official page before you fly.

A tip for the immigration counter

Keep your passport, return ticket and hotel booking in your hand bag, not in checked luggage. Time at the counter can eat into a Zohor or Asar window, so plan your first prayer after clearing immigration, not before. The prayer-stop itinerary checklist helps you place it.

An e-Visa is the version you apply for online before you go. Look it up in the glossary. For a wider first-trip plan, read choosing a first overseas holiday, or browse the halal labels and evidence hub.

Common questions

Is visa on arrival the same as visa-free?

No. Visa-free means you need no visa for a short stay. Visa on arrival means you still get a visa, but you receive it at the airport after landing. You may need to queue, fill in a form or pay a fee, so allow extra time before your connecting plans.

What should I carry for a visa on arrival?

Carry your passport, your return or onward ticket, and your hotel booking, kept where you can reach them. Rules can add other requirements. Check the destination's official immigration page before you fly, and keep a printed copy in case your phone battery runs out.

Can I rely on visa on arrival with elderly parents?

It can work, but the queue after a long flight is tiring. If the destination also offers an online option, apply before you fly. Ask your tour operator who meets you at the airport and whether the visa step is included in the arrival help.
