Dubai hotels: alcohol and mixed pools
You want a comfortable Dubai stay, with a usable pool and no bar below.
In Dubai, an international-style hotel can have a shared pool and a licensed bar under one roof, and a brochure will not say how that affects you. Ask the hotel directly about the pool, the bar’s position, the beach and your room’s floor, and keep the reply in writing. That tells you more than a star rating.
What is normal at a Dubai hotel?
A hotel built for international visitors can offer shared pools, bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. The country has a Muslim majority: Pew Research Center estimated 76.0% in 20101. Dubai’s hotels still serve a mixed guest list, so do not read the national picture as your hotel’s policy.
Plan to ask. Some hotels do better than others for your needs, and the only way to know is to put a question to that hotel.
Which facilities should I ask about?
Start with the five that affect most families and hijab-wearing travellers.
- Pool layout: is it shared, is there a separate area, and can anyone overlook it from a balcony or restaurant?
- Women-only options: is there a women-only time, area or private pool, and is there an extra fee?
- Swimwear: is modest swimwear accepted in the pool?
- Bar location: is it by the pool, the lobby or the breakfast room?
- Beach access: is it a public beach or hotel-controlled, and what is the layout?
You do not need all five to be perfect. You need to know which ones are not, so you can choose a room, a time or another hotel on purpose.
How do I ask, and how do I get it in writing?
Send one message to the hotel’s email or booking contact. Keep it polite and specific.
“We are a Muslim family travelling with [children / my mother]. Please tell us: (1) whether the pool is shared and whether a women-only time or area exists; (2) whether modest swimwear is accepted; (3) where the nearest bar is in relation to our room; (4) whether the minibar can be empty of alcohol. We would be grateful for a written reply before we confirm.”
The private-stay requirements builder helps you turn your own list into a message like this. For the larger set of items worth confirming, see which arrangements to confirm in writing.
How do I choose a room and a floor?
Ask for a room away from the pool deck and the bar, and not directly above them. A quiet corridor can be worth more than a view. If your family includes older parents, choose a room near the lift so that the walk to anywhere stays short.
What about halal food?
Alcohol-free and halal are not the same, and a hotel restaurant is still a restaurant. Treat each claim by its state: certified, declared or unknown. Our guide on Dubai halal rules explains what the municipality oversees and what it does not, and the five halal claim states give you the vocabulary.

Common questions
Are mixed pools normal in Dubai hotels?
Expect them unless the hotel states otherwise. A hotel built for international visitors usually has a shared pool. Some hotels also offer a separate area or a private pool, but you should not assume that. Ask the hotel what is available and whether it can be reserved.
Do Dubai hotels serve alcohol?
Licensed hotels can serve alcohol, so a hotel bar or restaurant that does is normal to expect. The practical question is where it sits in relation to your room, your pool and your breakfast, and whether it can be left out of your meal plan.
Can a hijab-wearing woman swim comfortably?
It depends on the facility, not the destination. Ask whether there is a women-only time or area, whether modest swimwear is accepted in the pool and whether the pool is overlooked. Ask in writing and keep the reply.
Is Dubai halal because it is a Muslim country?
The country's Muslim population does not decide your hotel's choices. Check the venue itself, using the same questions for any claim. Our guide on Dubai halal rules explains what the municipality oversees and what it leaves to the venue.
