Raya planning

Hari Raya abroad: what to book, and when

Everyone in Malaysia wants to fly the same few days, and the good rooms vanish first.

Book in this order: dates, stay, flights, then meals and prayer. The stay comes before flights because Muslim-friendly and family rooms fill first, and fares for the Raya long weekend rise as the date nears. Count the weeks back from the day you want to fly.

What do I need to know about the dates?

Hari Raya is set after moon sighting. For 2026, the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal declared Aidilfitri as Saturday, 21 March 2026, after the moon-sighting criteria were met5.

For 2027, a travel blog expects Ramadan to begin on 8 February 20272, and a federal schedule lists Hari Raya Puasa on 10 and 11 March 2027, subject to change1. School breaks around it are printed as 5 to 13 March for Kumpulan A3 and 6 to 14 March for Kumpulan B4. Check the official dates before you pay.

What is the week-by-week countdown?

Start the countdown the week you know your dates. Week 1 is your first week of planning.

Week 1: fix the basics. Confirm leave days and school dates. Check that every passport has six months or more left, because renewal is relevant when less than six months remain6.

Week 2: choose the place and the meal rule. Pick a destination and write your family’s one-line meal rule. Read our guide on Ramadan holidays abroad if you are fasting before Raya.

Week 3: hold the stay. Request a refundable room near a mosque, station or prayer space. Use the private-stay requirements builder to send your needs in one message.

Week 4: buy flights. Buy once the stay holds. Choose a fare you can change by a day.

Week 5: meals and tours. Message each venue about halal meals. If a tour is involved, compare two Muslim packages day by day and ask for the key points in writing, as our guide on what to confirm in writing explains.

Week 6: Eid prayer and loose ends. Ask a local mosque how Eid prayer is arranged. Request late checkout for Raya morning. Plan one family meal for the day itself.

Last days: entry forms. Thailand requires its digital arrival card three days before arrival7. Check every other country’s form on its official page.

What if I am starting late?

Do two weeks of tasks in one. Hold the stay and the flights on the same day, both with changeable terms. Message restaurants straight after, and treat anything that does not answer as unknown.

Why do the good stays vanish first?

Malaysian families all look for the same few nights. Rooms near mosques, adjoining rooms and breakfast-friendly hotels are limited. If you are comparing package offers, the Muslim-tour inclusion comparator puts the quotes side by side.

Common questions

Which should I book first, flights or the hotel?

Hold the stay first, with a free-cancellation rate where you can. Muslim-friendly rooms and family rooms run out before seats do, and a fixed flight with no room is a worse problem than the reverse. Then buy flights, once you know the room holds.

What if Raya moves by one day after moon sighting?

Keep one spare day at each end if you can, and choose flexible or changeable fares for the key legs. The official date is declared after moon sighting, as it was for Aidilfitri 2026. Book a hotel that lets you shift the check-in by a day.

Can we celebrate Raya morning prayer abroad?

In larger cities, usually at a mosque, but the time varies and is announced locally. Ask the mosque or a local Muslim association once you arrive and plan the morning around it. Ask your own ustaz if you want guidance on praying while travelling.

Should I book a tour or go independently for Raya?

A tour takes the fare and room hunt off you, but check the meal and prayer arrangements in writing. Going independently gives freedom for Eid prayer and family time. Compare the two with a day-by-day check, not just the headline price.

When do I need my passport and entry forms ready?

Renewal is relevant when a passport has less than six months of validity left, so check it in the first week. Entry cards come last, because some countries ask you to file them shortly before you arrive. Set a reminder for each destination.
