Istanbul Airport transit: prayer, meals and long connections

You land in a very large terminal with a connection ahead and a prayer window closing.

Istanbul Airport is a very large terminal, so the question is not “is there somewhere to pray?” but “which prayer space is near the gate I will actually use?” Work out where you will wait first, then choose the masjid and the meal around that spot.

Where can I pray?

The airport’s official site lists 44 masjids, split evenly between 22 for women and 22 for men1. There are also three prayer rooms for people of all religious backgrounds, at the escalator entrance across Gate F9 and across Omega 1 and Omega 2 in Area F2.

At the terminal entrance stands Ali Kuscu Mosque, with room for up to 6,230 people3. It is a good fit if you arrive early and are leaving the terminal area anyway. For a connection, the masjid nearest your departure area saves more time than the biggest one.

If your family splits into men and women for prayer, agree a meeting point and a time before you separate. A phone with no roaming can lose you quickly in a large hall.

How do I plan a connection step by step?

  1. Find your next gate first. Check the departures board before you pray or eat. If the gate is not shown yet, pick a central spot and recheck.
  2. Name the prayer, not the clock. Ask yourself whether Zohor or Asar falls in this connection. If you may jamak or qasar as a traveller, ask your own ustaz about it before the trip.
  3. Pray near your departure area. Choose the masjid on the airport map that is closest to where you will wait.
  4. Eat after you know the gate. Then you can see what is close to it.
  5. Keep a buffer for the last walk. A large terminal punishes tight plans.

Our airport stopover guide covers wudu and what to pack, and the prayer-stop checklist helps you place prayers around your flight times.

Can I trust the meals?

Treat every outlet as unknown until you have evidence. A busy concourse tells you nothing about certification, suppliers or alcohol in the sauce. JAKIM recognises two bodies in Turkiye, KASCERT International in Izmir and GIMDES in Istanbul5, so a certificate from another issuer is worth a closer look.

Practical choices:

  • A sealed packaged item with a label you can read.
  • Fish or a plain vegetable dish, with a question about sauces and cooking alcohol.
  • Food you brought from home, if the rules for your next country allow it.

Most Turkish food is not labelled at all, which is normal. Why Turkey rarely labels food, and what to look for instead explains it.

Which airport is my ticket really using?

Istanbul has more than one airport. AirAsia X lists a service from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen4, which is a different airport from Istanbul Airport. Check the airport name on your booking before you plan prayer or a transfer. If your two flights use different airports, you are not on a simple connection and need to plan it as a transfer.

What if the layover is long?

You have three choices: stay airside, stay for one proper meal and prayer, or leave. Our layover guide helps you decide. If you want to see one worked example, the 12 hour Istanbul layover shows how prayer and a meal fit around a city visit. For the city itself, read Istanbul for Muslim travellers.

If anyone is tired, elderly or travelling with small children, the airport is the safer place to rest. A calm connection is a perfectly good plan.

Send us your arrival and departure times and the passengers travelling, and we will help you decide whether to stay airside or leave, and where to place each prayer.

Common questions

Is there a place to pray inside Istanbul Airport?

Yes. The airport's official site lists 44 masjids, 22 for women and 22 for men. It also lists three prayer rooms open to people of every background. Check the airport map for the one nearest your departure area, then confirm it again once your gate is shown.

Can I wash for wudu before praying there?

The official page we used lists the masjids and rooms without ablution details, so do not assume. Make wudu before you land if you can, and carry a small bottle. Ask an information desk staff member which prayer space has wash facilities.

Is the food at the airport halal?

Treat any outlet as unknown until you see a certificate or ask the right questions. A shop on the concourse is not a claim of certification. Choose sealed items or fish and vegetable dishes, and ask about sauces and alcohol in cooking before you pay.

How early should I check for my next gate?

Look at the departures board as soon as you clear the arrival area, because gates in a very large terminal can sit far from where you landed. Do this before you pray or eat, so the walk does not eat the time you set aside.

Should I leave the airport on a long connection?

Only if the connection is long enough for the full trip back, with a margin for queues. Our layover guide helps you decide, and the Istanbul itinerary shows one worked example. If you are unsure, staying airside is the calmer choice.
