Praying in Taiwan and Hong Kong
You are combining two compact cities and want prayer to fit between the sights.
Taipei and Hong Kong both have a landmark mosque in an easy-to-reach district, and both are compact enough to pray at your hotel between sights. Plan one mosque stop in each city, and treat everything else as a bonus. This short route guide shows how.
What is the prayer situation in each city?
Taipei Grand Mosque in Da’an District opened in 19601. Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre at 105 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, opened its current building on 11 May 19842.
Both are central, which makes them easy to add to a day. Message each mosque before you go about visiting hours, the women’s area and how Fridays work.
Pew estimated Muslims at 0.1% of Taiwan’s population in 20103 and 1.3% of Hong Kong’s4. Both are small shares, so public prayer spaces are not everywhere. That is why the hotel room carries so much of the plan.

How does the clock and your app behave on this route?
Taiwan is on the same time as Malaysia5, and so is Hong Kong6. Your phone clock will not jump, but your prayer times still will, because they depend on the city.
- Open your prayer app after landing and set the new city.
- Do the same when you cross from Taipei to Hong Kong.
- Compare the first day’s times with a mosque notice board if one is displayed.
If your app and your mosque disagree, follow the mosque and ask which method it uses.
How should you place prayers in a day?
Pray Subuh at the hotel before you head out. Put the mosque near the middle of the day, when Zohor falls. Return to the hotel for Asar if sights are far away, or use a quiet corner with permission.
At a shop or station, ask staff first. Choose a spot away from the walkway, keep the prayer short, and say thank you.
If you plan to combine prayers while travelling, ask your ustaz or your state mufti office what applies to you.
Which city first?
If you are unsure, read the destination pages: Taipei for Muslim travellers, the Taiwan guide and the Hong Kong guide. Whichever you do first, arrive early enough to find your hotel and set the qibla before the first prayer falls.

Common questions
Which mosque should I plan around in Taipei?
Taipei Grand Mosque in Da'an District opened in 1960 and is the usual landmark for visitors. Message the mosque before you go to ask about visiting arrangements and the women's area, then place the rest of that day's sights nearby.
Where is the main mosque in Hong Kong?
Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre stands at 105 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, and opened its current building in 1984. It fits a day that already passes through Tsim Sha Tsui.
Do I need to change my phone clock between Malaysia, Taipei and Hong Kong?
No, both share Malaysia's time zone, so the clock stays the same. Your prayer app still needs the new city, because prayer times move with location. Update the location when you land and check once against the mosque.
Can I pray in the airport?
Check the official site of the airport you use, since facilities and layouts change. Plan to pray at your hotel before heading to the airport, and use any airport room as a bonus, not as the plan.
