Praying in Vietnam and Cambodia
You are on a budget trip and want to know where the next prayer will happen.
In Vietnam and Cambodia, plan for the hotel room first and a mosque second. The communities are small, so mosques are few and not on every route, but a room with floor space and a known qibla direction works anywhere. This guide shows how to set that up, even on a modest budget.
Which mosques can you plan around?
Saigon Central Mosque in Ho Chi Minh City was completed in 1935, with construction starting on 21 December 19341. It is the anchor for Ho Chi Minh City. Message it before you go about access, the women’s area and how Fridays work.
For the other places on your route, read the city pages: Hanoi, Da Nang and Siem Reap. Treat each mosque listed as unconfirmed until it replies to your message.
Why are options so limited?
Pew estimated Muslims at 0.2% of Vietnam’s population in 20102 and 1.6% of Cambodia’s3. These are small shares, so a prayer room in a mall or at a sight should be treated as a pleasant surprise.
That is not a reason to skip the trip. It is a reason to put prayer on your plan from the start.
How do you set up hotel-room prayer?
A hotel or guesthouse room is private, clean and costs nothing extra, which suits a budget trip.
- Ask for a room with floor space beside the bed, not a cramped corner.
- Ask the staff to show you the qibla direction, or set it with a compass app.
- Ask for a spare towel to use under your mat on a bare floor.
- Pray Subuh before leaving, then return when your route allows for Zohor or Asar.
The private-stay requirements builder turns these into a message you can send before arrival.
What changes when you cross the border?
Vietnam is one hour behind Malaysia4, so your clock will change and your prayer app needs a new city. When you move on to Cambodia, set the app again. Compare the first day’s times with a local mosque or hotel staff.
If you move from one place to another on a long bus or flight day, pray before you board and again after you check in.
What does the quiet-corner approach look like?
At a station or sight, ask staff first and pick a spot away from the walkway. Keep the prayer short. If you are unsure whether it is appropriate, wait until you reach your room.
If you plan to combine prayers while travelling, ask your ustaz or your state mufti office what applies to you.
Meals and prayer on the same day
A long lunch search can eat into the Zohor window, so plan the two together. Our guide on the difference between no-pork menus and halal in Vietnam explains meals, and Vietnam vs Thailand compares food access across the two.

Common questions
Is there a mosque I can plan around in Ho Chi Minh City?
Saigon Central Mosque in Ho Chi Minh City was completed in 1935 and is the usual anchor. Message it before your trip to ask about visitor access, the women's area and Fridays, then place nearby sights around its prayer window.
What if there is no mosque in the town I am visiting?
Use your hotel room. Pray before you leave in the morning, return in the middle of the day if your route allows, and finish the evening in the room. A room with floor space and a clear qibla direction covers most of what you need.
Does the clock change for Vietnam?
Vietnam is one hour behind Malaysia, so your phone clock changes and your prayer app should be set to the new city. Update the location after landing and compare once with a local mosque or hotel staff.
Can I ask a cheap guesthouse to help with prayer?
Yes. Ask for a room with floor space, a towel for the mat and the qibla direction. A short message before arrival saves a conversation at the desk.
