Getting around

Private driver or self-drive for a Muslim family trip

You need to stop for prayer, keep meals under control and spare your parents a long day.

Hire a driver if prayer stops, a parent’s comfort and meal control matter more than cost. Drive yourself if you want full control of every stop and are confident in the road rules. In both cases, plan the prayer windows first and the route second.

Which suits which family?

  • Older parents or young children: a private driver, so nobody is tired at the wheel and stops happen when needed.
  • Budget-minded families with a confident driver: self-drive, if the roads are familiar.
  • Strict-halal families: either, but you will need your own venue list. A driver does not certify food.
  • First-time visitors to a country: a driver, because unfamiliar roads add stress.

What does a driver add for prayer and meals?

A driver can pull in at a mosque or surau when asked, and wait. Tell them your prayer windows by name, Zohor and Asar, and ask whether they can adjust the day if a stop runs long.

A driver does not decide what is halal, so keep your short list of venues. The prayer-stop itinerary checklist lets you note each stop in advance.

What does self-drive give you, and cost you?

It gives you every choice, including a detour to a restaurant you checked. It also gives you the navigation, the parking, the tolls and the tiredness after a long day.

If you drive, keep days short and put a prayer stop and a rest in the middle of each leg. Our guide on planning sightseeing around five daily prayers shows how to block the day.

What should you ask a driver before booking?

  • “Can we stop for Zohor and Asar, and how long can we wait?”
  • “Will you tell us before you take us to any restaurant?”
  • “Does the price include fuel, tolls and waiting time?”
  • “Is the vehicle insured for passengers, and can I see the licence?”
  • “Can you carry a stroller or a folding chair for an older parent?”

If answers are vague, treat the arrangement as unconfirmed. Get the agreed stops in writing, as in which arrangements to confirm in writing.

What if the route is mostly cities?

In a city, public transport or a driver for a day may suit you better than a hire car. See private transfers or public transport when prayer matters for that comparison.

Your next step

Write your daily route with prayer blocks, then ask for a driver quote or a hire car price and compare. If you are also weighing a tour format, read private tour or group tour. For other choices, return to choosing where to go.

Common questions

Is a private driver better for prayer stops?

It can be, because the driver knows where to stop and you do not drive while tired. But a driver does not certify any mosque or prayer room. Tell the driver your prayer windows in advance and agree how long you need at each stop, so the plan is clear from the first morning.

Does self-drive give me more control over meals?

Yes, you pick every restaurant and can detour for a place you have checked. The price is that you do the research and the driving. Save your short list of venues before the trip, and keep sealed food in the car for the days when nothing fits.

What should I check before driving in another country?

Check that your Malaysian licence is accepted, or whether you need an international permit, with the official source of that country. Confirm insurance, which side of the road traffic keeps, and the fuel and toll rules for the hire car. Do this before you pay the deposit.
