What a private tour supplement covers
The quote adds a private supplement, and nobody has said what you are actually getting for it.
A private tour supplement is the extra you pay for your party to travel alone instead of joining a group departure. It normally pays for the vehicle and the person driving or guiding. It does not automatically pay for tickets, meals or waiting time, so the cheaper quote is the one with the fewest blank lines, not the one with the smaller supplement.
What does a supplement usually include?
Ask the operator to confirm each of these in writing.
- Vehicle and driver: for your party only, for the days you booked.
- A guide: sometimes the driver doubles as guide, sometimes not.
- Fuel, tolls and parking: these may be in the price or billed after.
- Your own timing: start time, pace, and the freedom to skip a sight.
If a line is not written, it is not promised.
What does it leave out?
Gaps are where the surprises sit. Check each one against your quote.
- Entrance tickets and local transport passes.
- Meals, including the driver’s or guide’s meals if you are expected to cover them.
- Waiting time beyond the planned hours, such as a long stop at a mosque or a slow morning.
- Airport transfers on arrival and departure days.
- Tips if the operator expects them.
- Changes to the route, which some operators charge for.
How does a supplement compare line by line?
Use one table for both quotes. Fill every cell with the operator’s words, or with “not stated”.
| Line | Quote A | Quote B |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle and driver | your note | your note |
| Guide | your note | your note |
| Tickets | your note | your note |
| Lunch and dinner | your note | your note |
| Waiting time | your note | your note |
| Airport transfers | your note | your note |
| Changes to the route | your note | your note |
The Muslim-tour inclusion comparator does this for you and also scores halal-meal and prayer arrangements. Prices change by season, so use the figures from the quotes in your hands.
Which lines matter for halal and prayer?
Two lines decide whether the supplement serves your faith needs. The first is the meal line: who picks the restaurant, and can you check it by your own standard? The second is the change line: can you reorder the day so that Zohor or Asar falls at a mosque or prayer room, and is waiting time charged?
Our guide on questions to ask a tour operator about halal meals gives the exact wording. The page on which arrangements to confirm in writing tells you what to keep in the written reply.
Is the operator real?
A supplement is only as good as the business that holds your deposit. Before you pay, check that the Malaysian agency is licensed. How to check a Malaysian travel agency licence shows how.
Your next step
Pick two quotes. Fill the table above for each, send the blank cells back to the operators as questions, and wait for written answers. If you are new to planning abroad, choosing a first overseas holiday as a Muslim Malaysian helps you decide what to ask first, and the costs hub covers the wider value questions.
Send us the two quotes you are comparing and we will help you line up what each supplement covers, so the gaps show before you pay.
Common questions
What is a private tour supplement?
It is an extra charge on top of a group price so that your party travels alone, with its own vehicle and guide or driver, on your timing. The name and the contents differ between operators, which is why you should ask for the lines it covers in writing.
Does a private supplement include meals?
Do not assume so. Some quotes include meals, others leave them out, and a few cover only the driver's meals. Ask whether lunch and dinner are inside, and who chooses the restaurant. For halal-strict families, the meal line matters more than the vehicle line.
Are entrance tickets part of the supplement?
Check each sight. A supplement usually pays for the vehicle and the person driving or guiding, while tickets may sit in a separate line or be paid on the day. Ask for a list of which sights are ticketed and who pays.
Can a private tour change its route for prayer?
That is the main reason to go private, but it works only if the quote allows changes. Ask whether the route can be reordered, whether extra waiting is charged and what happens if a prayer stop adds distance.
How do I compare two supplements fairly?
Put both quotes in the same table: vehicle, guide, tickets, meals, waiting time, airport transfers, tips and changes. Fill the same cells for each. A cheaper supplement with four blank cells is not cheaper until you have filled them.
