Finding the qibla in a hotel room
You have just checked in, the room is unfamiliar, and Zohor is near.

Find the qibla (the direction of the Kaabah in Makkah, which you face to pray) by using two methods that check each other. An in-room arrow plus a phone or map app is enough for most rooms. This guide shows how to do it and what can throw each method off.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Good for | What can go wrong | Cross-check with |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-room arrow or sticker | The fastest answer | It may be wrong for the current layout | A phone or map app |
| Ask the front desk | Knowing whether the hotel helps | Staff may point roughly | The arrow or an app |
| Phone compass app | Any room, any country | Metal and poor calibration | A map app |
| Map app | A check that ignores room metal | Wrong location or weak signal | The compass app |
| Physical compass | A backup with no battery | Shows north only, you need the bearing | A reliable app |
How do you check a phone compass app?
Do this once, on your first evening, then mark the result.
- Stand in the middle of the room, away from the bed frame, television and any speaker.
- Calibrate the compass by tracing a figure of eight in the air.
- Switch on location, and wait until the app confirms your position.
- Read the direction, then move two steps and read it again. If it jumps, metal is interfering.
If the second reading differs, move to another spot in the room and repeat. The aim is a reading that stays steady in two places.
How does a map app check it?
Open a map app, find your blue dot, and look for the Kaabah in Makkah. The line from your dot to it gives you a general direction. Match that to something in the room, for example a window edge or a wall.
This is a good second opinion because the app does not depend on the compass in your phone. It does depend on your location being right, so check that first.
What about an in-room arrow?
Hotels that cater to Muslim guests sometimes put one in the drawer or on the ceiling. Do not assume it is right. Compare it with your app and, if they agree, you have two matching answers.
If they disagree, trust the app you have just calibrated and ask the front desk to check. Mention it in a message so the hotel can fix it for the next guest.
How do you mark the direction?
Once you are sure, mark it so you do not repeat the exercise at every prayer.
- Stick a small piece of paper tape on the wall or lay your mat in position.
- Take a photo of the room with the mat down so you can set it again.
- Note which wall or window edge you face.
If you plan to combine prayers while travelling, ask your ustaz or your state mufti office what applies to you.
What should you ask the hotel in advance?
Send this: “Is there a qibla arrow or sticker in the room? Can the front desk confirm the direction? Please also confirm there is floor space for a prayer mat.” The private-stay requirements builder writes it with your other needs.
Your next step
After you check in, run the two-method check once, mark it, and note it on your prayer-stop itinerary checklist. If a day’s route takes you away from the room, read how to find a prayer room or mosque when you are abroad. The Prayer and daily pacing hub links the rest, and where you can pray in Asian cities explains what to expect by country.
Send us the hotel you are considering and we will help you word the request for a qibla mark, floor space and a clean bathroom before you book.
Common questions
Can I trust the qibla arrow in my hotel room?
Treat it as a good first answer, not proof. A sticker may have been placed for a different layout, or the room may have been refurnished. Check it against your phone or a map app, and if the two agree, you can pray with confidence.
Why does my phone compass give a different direction in each corner?
Metal bed frames, speakers, televisions and desks bend the phone's magnetic sensor. Move to the middle of the room, away from metal, and calibrate the compass by tracing a figure of eight in the air. Take the reading again.
Is a map app more reliable than a compass app?
A map app uses your location and a known point, so it is not thrown off by metal in the room. It still needs a correct location, so make sure location is switched on. Use it as the second opinion for your compass app.
Do I need a physical compass?
Not usually, because your phone does the same job. A small compass is a reasonable backup if your phone battery is low. It only shows north, so you still need the qibla bearing for your city from a reliable app or a mosque.
What if I cannot be sure of the direction?
Face the direction you believe is best after checking two ways. If you remain unsure, ask your ustaz or your state mufti office how to proceed when certainty is not possible. Guidance for travellers is one more reason to ask in advance.
What can I ask the hotel before arrival?
Send one line: Is there a qibla arrow or sticker in the room, and can the front desk confirm it? Also ask for floor space for a mat. The private-stay requirements builder writes this message for you.
