Breaking fast on planes and in transit airports
Your flight crosses sunset in Ramadan, and you are not sure when or how to break fast.
If you are fasting on a long flight, settle two things before you board: which sunset you will follow, and what you will eat when the time comes. Both are easier to answer on the ground, so ask your ustaz first and pack a small iftar kit second.
When does maghrib fall on a flight?
Maghrib is the moment of sunset where you are. On a flight that moment moves, because the aircraft is travelling east or west while the sun sets. Flying west keeps you in daylight longer, and flying east brings sunset earlier.
Before you fly, ask your own ustaz or state mufti office how to decide. Write the answer in one line on your phone. A prayer app can show you the sunset time for your departure city, but it cannot decide which place you follow.
What should I settle before boarding?
- The rule you will follow: departure sunset, the aircraft’s position, or the arrival place.
- Who to tell: tell the crew when you board that you are fasting.
- Where your food is: keep dates and water in your seat pocket or cabin bag.
If the crew’s meal service falls before sunset, ask politely whether your tray can be kept for later. If they cannot, your own food covers you. The dietary enquiry brief generator can help you write down what you need.
What should I pack for iftar?
Pack in the cabin bag, not the hold:
- Dates, enough for you and anyone you travel with.
- A bottle of water bought after security.
- A dry, simple snack that survives a squeezed bag.
- A small wet towel or wipes, and a scarf for prayer.
Check the food rules at your destination before you pack anything with meat. Taiwan’s immigration agency tells travellers not to bring meat-containing foods or meals provided on flights3. Japan’s MAFF prohibits bringing even heat-treated meat products as a rule4. Dates and plain nuts are the simplest to carry.
How do I handle a transit airport?
Check whether the prayer room is inside the transit area before you leave it. Changi Airport’s prayer rooms are located only in the transit areas and are not accessible to the landside public2, so leaving the building can mean losing access.
Plan wudu at the washroom before you go to the prayer room. If your transit is short, pray at the gate area where possible, and ask your ustaz about shortening or combining prayers. For a longer layover, read the airport’s official facilities page before you land.
When is Ramadan?
A travel blog expects Ramadan 2027 to begin on Monday, 8 February 2027, with dates confirmed only after moon sighting by JAKIM and state religious authorities1. Treat that as an estimate and check the official announcement before you book.
Next step
Mark your flight and transit on the prayer-stop itinerary checklist. Then confirm in writing any meal timing the airline has agreed, using which arrangements to confirm in writing. For the whole day’s rhythm, read how to plan sightseeing around five daily prayers, and see the prayer and daily pacing hub.

Common questions
Which sunset do I follow when I am in the air?
That is a fiqh question, and scholars differ on it. Ask your own ustaz or your state mufti office before you fly, and write down the answer. Then you only need to apply it in the cabin. Some travellers keep to the place they departed from until the crew announce otherwise.
Can I ask the airline to serve my meal at sunset?
You can ask. Some airlines let you request a special meal and speak to the crew about timing. Tell the crew when you board that you are fasting and would like the meal kept for sunset. Do not count on it, and carry your own backup.
What should I carry for iftar?
Dates, a bottle of water bought after security, and a light, dry snack in your cabin bag are enough to break fast. Keep them within reach, not in an overhead locker. Check the destination's rules on food before packing anything with meat.
Where can I pray during a transit?
Look for a prayer room inside the transit area. Changi Airport, for example, has its prayer rooms only in the transit areas and not for the landside public. Check your airport's official page before you fly, because you may need to stay airside.
Do I fast on a flight if I am travelling?
Whether to fast or make it up later while travelling is for you and your own ustaz to decide. This page only helps you plan the practical side: timing, food and a place to pray.
