Raya and school-holiday departures: what changes

Everyone wants the same dates as you, and that changes more than the price.

Raya and school breaks fill the same departures, so Muslim packages cost more and sell out earlier. The harder shortages are not only seats. They are hotel rooms that suit a family, restaurants with confirmed meals and quiet places to pray. Plan the booking order before you pick a destination.

Which dates count as peak?

Dates change each year and some depend on moon sighting, so check each one on the official page before you fly. These are the figures in our reference list.

  • The Kumpulan A school breaks in 2027 are printed as 5-13 March, 21 May-5 June, 27 August-4 September and 3-31 December1.
  • The Kumpulan B breaks are printed as 6-14 March, 22 May-6 June, 28 August-5 September and 4-31 December2.
  • The 2027 federal schedule lists Hari Raya Puasa on 10 and 11 March, subject to change after moon sighting3.
  • Hari Raya Qurban is listed on 17 May 2027, with a second day on 18 May for Kelantan and Terengganu only4.
  • One travel blog expects Ramadan 2027 to begin on Monday, 8 February 2027, confirmed only after moon sighting5.

The school-break figures come from a secondary site. Confirm them against the circular from the Ministry of Education (KPM) before you pay a deposit.

What changes in a Muslim package at peak?

Price. Operators label busy dates as peak and charge more. Our guide to what drives private tour prices explains the lines that move.

Availability. Rooms for families, adjoining rooms and rooms near a prayer space go first. A Muslim-friendly property has fewer such rooms than a large business hotel.

Meals. A restaurant that cooks for one tour group may not manage more than one at once. When a booked meal falls through, the replacement is the risk, so ask what it is.

Prayer. Airport, mall and attraction prayer rooms are busier when more families travel together. Build time for a queue into each prayer stop.

How should you decide what to lock first?

Follow this order. It protects the parts that are hardest to rebuild.

  1. Confirm your dates, with the official school and festival announcements in hand.
  2. Reserve rooms that suit your family, including a quiet room for older parents.
  3. Get meal types per day in writing, and ask for a named backup for each meal.
  4. Ask for the prayer stops to be written into the daily schedule.
  5. Leave optional tours until last, since they are easiest to add.

The Muslim-tour inclusion comparator lets you line up two quotes for the same peak dates. For what to ask the agent to write down, see which arrangements to confirm in writing.

What if the dates are fixed and the options feel thin?

If you cannot move the dates, choose a route with an easier time on the ground rather than the most popular name. Fewer city changes mean fewer lunches to confirm and fewer bags to carry. Planning sightseeing around five daily prayers shows how to keep the day workable when it is crowded.

A seven-day route such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka for halal-strict travellers is a useful reference for how to space meals and prayer, even if you change the cities.

Your next step

Write down the two dates you cannot move and the one room need you cannot compromise on. Send those first when you ask for quotes. For all the ways to compare packages, see our Muslim tour packages hub.

Tell us the dates you cannot move and who is travelling, and we will help you decide what to lock first, before the peak departures fill.

Common questions

Why are Muslim packages dearer at Raya and school breaks?

Demand lands on the same dates, so operators price those departures as peak. Hotels, coaches and guides are booked out first, and a Muslim-friendly option has fewer rooms and restaurants to share. Ask the operator to label each date as peak or base so you can see the difference.

How early do the best-fitting departures sell out?

There is no published rule, so ask the operator for the status of your dates instead of guessing. What you can control is the order of decisions: dates first, then rooms and parent-friendly pace, then meals. If your dates are fixed, enquire as early as you can.

Will halal meals be harder to get at peak times?

They can be. Restaurants and tour kitchens that serve one group may be full when more groups arrive at once. Ask for the meal type per day in writing, and ask what the replacement is if a booked restaurant cannot take your group.

Do school holidays affect prayer access?

Prayer rooms at airports, malls and attractions can be busier when more families travel. Plan a margin before departures and between sights, and treat the trip's prayer stops as bookings of time, not as afterthoughts.

Are the dates certain?

No. Festival dates depend on moon sighting, and school calendars are set by the Ministry of Education. Treat any date here as a planning estimate, and check the official announcement before you commit to a non-refundable booking.
