Costs and value

Small group or private for six?

With five or six at the table, the small-group quote suddenly looks much higher.

For a couple, a small group is usually the cheaper way to see a country with a guide. For a family of five or six, the sum changes, because a small group charges every seat while a private departure charges the vehicle and guide once. The cost per head tips towards private as you fill the vehicle, and the non-price gains grow with the size of the party.

Why does the sum change as the family grows?

A small-group departure is priced per seat. Each person you add costs another full seat.

A private departure is priced per vehicle and guide. The first person carries the whole fixed cost, and each extra person shares it. That is why the same operator can look expensive for one traveller and fair for six.

There is a catch: a bigger party may need a bigger vehicle, and the price can step up at that point. Ask for the quote for both vehicle sizes so you can see the step.

How do you find your own flip point?

Use your two quotes.

  • Take the private total and divide it by the number of people in your family.
  • Take the small-group price for one seat.
  • Compare the two figures per head, for the same number of days.
  • Count what each one includes: tickets, meals, airport transfers, waiting time.

If the private figure per head is close to the group seat price, the extra control is almost free. If it is far above, the question becomes whether prayer and meal control is worth the gap. Our Muslim-tour inclusion comparator lets you set the quotes side by side. Prices change by season, so use the quotes you actually hold.

Which family suits which option?

A small group suits a family where everyone is flexible about meals and the itinerary already names its prayer stops. It also suits a family that wants the company of other travellers.

A private departure suits a family with grandparents or small children, with strict halal needs, or with different observance levels that need handling inside the family, not by vote. See planning sightseeing around five daily prayers to see how much prayer timing shapes a day.

What should you ask before you pay?

  • “Is the price per seat or per vehicle, and does it change if we are six, not five?”
  • “Which vehicle size is quoted, and what happens if our luggage does not fit?”
  • “Who else is on the departure, and can we see the meal and prayer plan?”
  • “Is waiting time at a prayer stop charged?”

Send these as written questions and keep the answers. The guide on comparing two Muslim packages day by day shows how to check the replies against each other, and the private-stay requirements builder helps if you also need a room plan for a large family.

Your next step

Put both quotes in the comparator, write the prayer and meal lines in words, and decide which gap you are happiest to pay for. The costs hub has the wider value guides.

Tell us the size of your party, the ages, and how strict your meals and prayer timing are, and we will help you compare the two quotes on the same terms.

Common questions

At what size does a private departure become cheaper per head?

There is no single number, because it depends on the two quotes. Divide the private total by your party size and compare it with the small-group price per seat. The more of the vehicle you fill, the closer the private figure moves towards the group figure.

Why does a family of six cost more in a small group?

Small groups price by seat, so each extra person adds a full seat price. A private departure prices by vehicle and guide, so extra people share a fixed cost until the vehicle is full. A larger vehicle can add a step, so ask for both vehicle sizes.

Are the non-price differences important for a big family?

Yes. In a small group, strangers vote on meal stops and pace. In a private departure, your own family decides, which matters for halal checks, prayer windows and grandparents. Put that in the comparison even if you cannot put a ringgit figure on it.

Can a small group still work for a family of five?

It can, when the operator writes meal and prayer arrangements into the itinerary and the other travellers share your needs. Ask who else is on the departure and whether any other seats are unfilled.

How can we keep a private departure affordable?

Do not chase the lowest figure on the page. Reduce the days, share a vehicle with relatives or accept a smaller guide scope. Then compare line by line in the inclusion comparator, so the saving is real and not just a missing meal.
