Visa and entry

Tour visas and entry: who does what

The package says visa assistance, and you are unsure what that actually covers.

A tour agency can arrange paperwork and remind you of deadlines. It cannot decide whether you are allowed in, and it cannot see your passport problems before you do. Treat visa assistance as help with forms, and verify the entry rules yourself on official sites.

What can an agency arrange, and what is yours?

What are the entry rules for the popular routes?

Rules are volatile, so these are starting points, not final answers. Malaysian citizens do not need a visa to enter Japan for a short stay of less than 90 days1. For Vietnam, a stay of up to 30 days needs no visa2. For Cambodia, entry is visa-free for up to 30 days3.

Indonesia is visa-exempt for 30 days counted from arrival as day one4. It also asks for a passport valid for at least six months with two blank pages, an onward ticket and the arrival card filed before landing5. Check the official page before you fly.

Which questions should you ask the agency?

Copy these into a message and ask for answers in writing.

  • “Which entry tasks do you handle, and which do I do myself?”
  • “If a visa or online form is needed, who files it, and do I get a copy?”
  • “What happens to my payment if entry is refused or a form is rejected?”
  • “Which countries on this route have conditions on passport validity?”
  • “Is the group’s departure date fixed before the visa result?”

What about a multi-country route?

A route that crosses a border adds a second set of rules. Each country has its own limits, forms and valid dates, and a stay that is fine for one country may not suit the next. Ask the agency to list entry requirements per country, and compare the list with the official pages.

For the wider paperwork you should keep in writing, see which arrangements to confirm in writing.

Who should you trust to sell you the package?

Entry help only counts if the agency is licensed. Our guide on how to check a Malaysian travel agency licence shows the steps before you pay.

Better options when

If this is your first holiday abroad, a shorter trip to one country makes the entry list simpler. See choosing a first overseas holiday.

Your next step

Write the entry list for each country on one page, with the official page link, your passport expiry date and the form deadline. Then compare it with each quote using comparing two Muslim packages day by day. The wider set is in our Muslim tour packages hub.

Tell us the countries on your package and the passport expiry dates in your group, and we will help you list what to confirm on each official site.

Common questions

Does the agency take responsibility if my entry is refused?

Read the terms before you pay. An agency may help with forms, but a border officer makes the entry decision, and your own passport and documents are your responsibility. Ask in writing what the agency does if entry is refused, and what is refundable.

Do Malaysians need a visa for Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia or Indonesia?

At the time of writing, short stays are visa-free for Malaysian passports in all four, with different limits and conditions. These rules are volatile, so confirm each on the Malaysian embassy page or the official immigration site before you fly.

My passport has a few months left. Is that enough?

Not always. Some countries ask for a minimum validity and blank pages. Indonesia, for example, lists a minimum validity and blank pages. Check the destination's rule on the official page, and renew your passport early if you are close to the limit.

Who fills in the online arrival forms?

Ask the agency before you pay. Some forms are filed by the traveller before landing, and names must match the passport exactly. If the agency says it will file them, ask for a copy of each submitted form and keep it on your phone.
