Turkey and Uzbekistan

Turkey or Uzbekistan: how much can you assume

Both are Muslim-majority, and you wonder whether that means you can stop checking.

Muslim-majority makes some things easier in both countries, and it does not decide your meal. In Turkey and Uzbekistan you can ask in a place where more people understand the question. You still ask it. Alcohol, meat suppliers and certificates need the same checks you would make anywhere.

Which traveller fits which country?

  • Elderly parents: choose by route. Keep walks short and plan one sit-down meal and one prayer stop each afternoon.
  • Strict about certificates: ask in both, and read the issuer.
  • Culture and mosques first: both reward you, with different landmarks.
  • Your family differs on strictness: agree the line before booking.

Our guide to a first holiday with elderly parents sets the pace.

What do the population figures say?

Pew Research estimated Muslims at 98.6% of Turkey in 20101 and 96.5% of Uzbekistan2. The figures are old. They tell you about the country, not about the stove in front of you.

What can you check on certificates?

JAKIM recognises two bodies in Turkiye: KASCERT International and GIMDES3. If you see a certificate, check that the issuer matches and the date is current. For Uzbekistan, open JAKIM’s current foreign list and search the country, and keep to the same questions. Our guide to JAKIM-recognised foreign certifiers shows how.

How do prayer and landmarks fit a parent’s day?

Istanbul Airport lists 44 masjids, split evenly between men and women4. That helps on arrival and departure days. In the city, the Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 16175. In 2020 Hagia Sophia was reclassified as a mosque6.

In Uzbekistan, the Ulugh Beg Madrasa at the Registan in Samarkand was built between 1417 and 14207. The Kalyan Minaret in Bukhara dates from 11278. Historic sites are a reason to go. They are not a meal plan, so set your meal stops separately.

What about entry?

Malaysian MOFA states Malaysians are exempted from visas for travel to Turkey for up to 90 days9. For Uzbekistan it states a 30-day visa-free regime counted from date of entry10. Check the official pages before you fly.

What should I check before choosing?

  • “Is there alcohol or cooking wine in this dish or sauce?”
  • “Where does the meat come from, and is the supplier certified?”
  • “Can I see a certificate, and who issued it?”
  • “Is there a place to sit and pray close to the afternoon sights?”

Your next step

Common questions

Can I assume food is halal in Turkey or Uzbekistan?

You can assume more people understand your question, which helps. You cannot assume every kitchen meets your standard. Ask about alcohol in cooking, the meat supplier and whether a certificate exists. Your standard decides what is enough, and only the venue can tell you what it does.

Which is easier for elderly parents?

It depends on the route, not the country. Choose the one where long walks and transfers can be kept short, and where a sit-down meal and a prayer space fall into each afternoon. A shorter itinerary with more rest suits parents better than a longer one.

Do both have mosques near the main sights?

Both have historic mosques. Istanbul has the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, and Uzbekistan has the Registan madrasas and Kalyan Minaret in Bukhara. Check on a map how close each is to your day's route, and where the nearest prayer space is.

How do I check a certificate in these countries?

Look at who issued it and the expiry date. Turkey has two JAKIM-recognised bodies. For Uzbekistan, open JAKIM's current foreign list and search. If no certificate is shown, treat the venue as unknown and ask your questions.
