Washing before prayer

Wudhu at airports and train stations

You need to make wudhu between connections, and a public restroom feels like the wrong place.

Wudhu is easiest in a dedicated ablution area, and second easiest at a quiet restroom sink. Knowing which one a station or airport is likely to offer, and having a discreet routine ready, removes most of the stress. This page covers the five places you can make wudhu in a transport hub, and how to do it politely and quickly.

Where can I make wudhu in a transport hub?

There are five common options, from the most comfortable to the last resort.

  • A dedicated ablution area next to the prayer room. Changi Airport says its prayer rooms provide ablution areas and Qibla signage1. Haneda says its prayer rooms have facilities for physical cleansing before worship2.
  • A restroom sink near the prayer room. Common in train stations and smaller airports.
  • A quiet restroom elsewhere in the hub. A restroom at the far end of a terminal is usually the least crowded.
  • The aircraft restroom. Possible, but it is small and moves with turbulence.
  • Your hotel, before you leave. The most private option, and the easiest.

How do I keep it discreet?

Stay calm and quick. People in a public restroom are focused on their own business, and a short routine looks like any other hand-washing.

  • Pick a sink at the end of a row, away from the queue.
  • Roll sleeves before you start, not while standing at the sink.
  • Keep water use small. Wet floors cause accidents, and wiping the counter afterwards is a courtesy.
  • Use a pocket towel to dry the edges of your sleeves and feet.

What helps solo women and hijab wearers?

You carry more than one thing to protect from water, so a small routine pays off.

  • An inner cap or pinned scarf. It stays on while you wash your face and arms, and you can lift it quickly to wipe your head if your ustaz allows.
  • A top with wide cuffs or short sleeves under a cardigan. The sleeves go up fast and stay dry.
  • Socks you can remove in a few seconds. Pull them off in a stall, wash, dry thoroughly, and put dry ones on.
  • A separate women’s area. Changi states that its prayer facilities have separate areas or rooms for men and women3. At any hub, check the facilities page for the same.

If the restroom is crowded and you feel unsafe, leave and try another. Your comfort comes before the clock.

What should I check before I go?

Look up each airport’s official facilities page and each station’s information page before you travel. Check whether the prayer room is before or after immigration, because that changes where you can wash. Where a station does not mention a prayer room, plan to make wudhu at the hotel and carry a small towel.

For Japan, our guide to prayer rooms at Japanese transit hubs shows how the larger stations compare. On a long flight, praying on the plane explains asking the crew for space.

Common questions

Can I make wudhu in a station restroom?

You can, if the sink is clean and you can keep the floor dry. Choose a restroom that is quiet, pick a sink at the end, and wipe the surfaces afterwards. If you want a ruling on wiping over socks, ask your ustaz. We only help with the logistics of doing it politely.

How do I keep my hijab in place while washing?

Wear an inner cap or a pinned scarf you can lift quickly. Wash your face, hands and arms first, then wipe the head under the scarf if your ustaz allows. A wide-neck top that does not soak at the cuffs saves a second change. Carry a small towel for the edges.

What if the prayer room has no place to wash?

Make wudhu in the nearest restroom, then walk over in dry socks. A plastic bag for wet socks and a small towel make this smooth. If you are in a long queue, pray in the room only if your wudhu is still valid, and ask an attendant where the washing area is.

Is it better to make wudhu before I leave?

Yes, because it avoids the hardest step. If you make wudhu at the hotel or at home, you can usually pray at the first prayer room you find without washing again. Just remember what breaks wudhu, and ask your ustaz if you are unsure.
