Year-end trips

Where can a Muslim family go in December?

The school holidays are here, and every cheap flight seems to go somewhere freezing or packed.

A travel map, notebook and bag on a table

The best December trip for a Muslim family is the one where the weather, the crowds and the prayer windows all suit the people in your group. Warm destinations make solat and wudu simple. Cold ones reward families who plan each afternoon.

Here is how to match the month to the place, starting with the dates you have.

When are the school holidays?

For 2026, one source prints the year-end break as 5 to 31 December1. For 2027, the same kind of listing prints 3 to 31 December for Kumpulan A states2 and 4 to 31 December for Kumpulan B states3.

These are secondary listings, so check the official circular from the Ministry of Education (KPM) before you pay for anything.

Weather shifts, so check the forecast the week before you fly.

Which fits which family?

  • Young children: Thailand or Singapore. Warm days mean fewer layers and easier toilet and wudu stops.
  • Older parents: a warm base, or a cold one with a hotel next to a station and a rest each midday.
  • Families who love snow and lights: Japan or Korea, with every meal planned by claim state.
  • Mixed-observance families: pick a place where the strictest person can still eat and pray without a daily negotiation.

How do short winter days change prayer?

In cold countries the afternoon is short. Zohor and Asar fall close together, and Maghrib arrives soon after. So put the long outdoor stop between Subuh and Zohor, and plan to be near a prayer room, mosque or your hotel by mid-afternoon.

Our guide to planning sightseeing around five daily prayers shows how to build that day. For jamak and qasar while travelling, ask your own ustaz or your state mufti office.

What do you need for entry?

Check each rule on the official page before you fly. Malaysians can enter Japan without a visa for a stay of less than 90 days5. Thailand’s 30-day exemption list, which includes Malaysia, takes effect on 15 September 20264. Turkey allows up to 90 days without a visa7.

Next step

Read the destination guides for Japan, South Korea and Thailand, then open the prayer-stop itinerary checklist to test your draft day. For more on choosing, see choosing where to go.

Tell us who is travelling, which state group your children are in and how your parents cope with cold, and we will narrow the list to two or three destinations.

Common questions

Is December a good month for a first trip abroad with children?

It can be, if you choose by weather and pace rather than price alone. Warm destinations let children play outside and keep prayer simple. Cold ones mean heavy layers, slower mornings and early darkness. Pick the climate your family handles best, then check halal meals and prayer spots before you pay.

Can older parents cope with a cold December destination?

Some can, with planning. Cold makes wudu and short walks between sights harder, so choose a base near a station, keep outdoor stops short and build in a warm midday rest. If your parents struggle with cold, a warm destination is kinder. Ask their doctor about travel if they have health conditions.

Do winter days change when we can pray?

Yes. In northern winter the day is short, so Zohor and Asar sit closer to sunset and the Asar window can close earlier than you expect. Check the prayer-time app for each city the week you fly, and plan the longest outdoor stop for the morning.

Should we book halal meals for Christmas and New Year dates?

Yes, as early as you can. Venues can be busy or closed around the festive days, and group bookings fill first. Send your dates and your meal rule in writing, and ask each venue whether it is open on the days you plan to visit.

How early should we confirm the school-holiday dates?

Check the official KPM calendar before you book. Secondary summaries of the dates can differ from the circular, and your state group decides your exact first and last day. Confirm your own state group, then count your trip days from there.
