Turkey itinerary

Eight days in Istanbul and Cappadocia

You want a first Turkey trip where prayer fits the day and your parents are not rushed.

This plan gives your family eight days across Istanbul and Cappadocia, with mosques as the daily rhythm and one domestic flight instead of a long road transfer. It suits a first Turkey trip with older parents. Check each day’s prayer windows on your app.

Who is this plan for?

It is for families and groups of three generations who want history without a rush. It is an outline, not a booking. Turkey is a Muslim-majority country, but you still check every meal and every hotel.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1: Arrive in Istanbul and rest.
  • Day 2: Sultanahmet: Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia.
  • Day 3: Bosphorus and bazaar day.
  • Day 4: Slow day, then fly to Cappadocia.
  • Day 5: Valleys and cave villages.
  • Day 6: Underground city and an easy afternoon.
  • Day 7: Fly back to Istanbul.
  • Day 8: Fly home.

What do Malaysians need to enter Turkey?

Malaysian ordinary passport holders are exempt from visas for up to 90 days1. The passport must be valid for more than 60 days beyond your stay2, and a return or round-trip ticket must be provided3. Check the official page before you fly.

Turkey is 5 hours behind Malaysia11, so jet lag and prayer times shift. The emergency number is 11214. AirAsia X flies from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen12, and Malaysia Airlines’ list shows its Istanbul service as terminated13. Check current routes with your agent.

Day by day

Day 1: Arrive and rest

Istanbul Airport lists 44 masjids, 22 for women and 22 for men4, and three prayer rooms open to all religions5. If you land at Sabiha Gokcen instead, ask the airport staff. Go to the hotel and rest. Eat a simple dinner.

Day 2: Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia

Visit the Blue Mosque, built between 1609 and 16176, in the morning. Dress modestly, and plan your visit around the prayer times so you do not enter during prayer. Hagia Sophia was completed in AD 5377, and in 2020 its status was changed back to a mosque8. Check the current visiting rules before you queue.

Rest after Zohor. Choose a lunch place with a certificate you can see. Pray Asar at a mosque nearby or at the hotel.

Day 3: Bosphorus and bazaar

Take a boat on the Bosphorus in the morning. Return for Zohor. In the afternoon, walk the spice bazaar slowly and buy from stalls that label their products. Ask about gelatine and alcohol in sweets before you buy gifts.

Day 4: Slow day and domestic flight

Keep the morning empty. Pray Zohor, then fly to Cappadocia in the afternoon. Ask your agent to put the flight and the hotel transfer in writing. Arrive, pray Maghrib and eat an easy dinner.

Day 5: Valleys and cave villages

Start after Subuh and breakfast. Walk one valley at a gentle pace and stop for tea. Return for Zohor in the hotel. If your parents want the hot-air balloon, check the pre-dawn start and the climb into the basket, and let them decide.

Day 6: Underground city

Visit an underground city in the morning, but only if everyone can manage low corridors. Pray Zohor and rest. Use the afternoon for a pottery village and a quiet dinner. Pray Maghrib at the hotel.

Day 7: Fly back to Istanbul

Fly after breakfast. Arrive, rest and pray. Spend the evening on a light walk in a neighbourhood near your hotel.

Day 8: Fly home

Pray Subuh, eat a breakfast you have checked and go to the airport with margin. Keep medicines in your hand luggage.

How do you check food here?

JAKIM recognises two bodies in Turkiye, KASCERT International in Izmir and the Association for the Inspection and Certification of Food and Supplies, GIMDES, in Istanbul9. Look for a certificate from one of them, and check that it covers this branch.

Pew Research Center estimated Muslims at 98.6% of Turkey in 201010, so halal meat is easier to find, but a hotel dining room may still serve alcohol. Read our guide to alcohol in Turkish hotels and restaurants before you choose a hotel.

Where should you stay?

In Istanbul, choose an area near Sultanahmet if mosques are the focus, so that you can walk back to rest. In Cappadocia, choose a cave hotel with a lift or ground-level rooms if stairs are a problem. Ask for a room with a clear qibla direction, which is the direction you face to pray.

How to adjust this plan

  • Shorter: drop Day 3 and keep Sultanahmet and Cappadocia.
  • Slower: add a night in Cappadocia and remove the underground city.
  • With toddlers: skip the balloon and choose a hotel with a lift.
  • In Ramadan: keep outings to the morning and ask hotels about iftar and sahur.

What to confirm in writing

Ask your agent to write down the domestic flight, the hotels, the meal plan and the daily prayer breaks. Our prayer-stop itinerary checklist tests the whole plan. For the destination detail, read Muslim travel in Turkey, then Istanbul and Cappadocia.

Use how to plan sightseeing around five daily prayers to place stops. Browse more Muslim tour packages if you want a guided option.

Tell us who is travelling, your parents' age and whether you prefer a fixed or free route, and we can shape these eight days and write the meal and prayer questions for your agent.

Common questions

Is eight days enough for Istanbul and Cappadocia?

Eight days works for a first trip with four nights in Istanbul, three in Cappadocia and a day to fly home. Do not add a third region. If your parents tire easily, keep one major sight per half-day and let the hot-air balloon go.

Do we fly or drive between Istanbul and Cappadocia?

Fly. A domestic flight saves a long overland day that older parents may not enjoy. Ask your agent for the airport in Cappadocia and the transfer time to your hotel, and plan the rest of that day empty. Carry medicines and one change of clothes in hand luggage.

Can we assume food is halal because Turkey is Muslim-majority?

No. Turkey is a Muslim-majority country, but that does not tell you about a particular kitchen. Hotels and restaurants can serve alcohol and cook with it. Ask about the supplier, the kitchen and the certificate, and treat unknown as unknown.

How do we handle prayer at the major mosques?

Visit around the prayer, not through it. Mosques may limit visitors during prayer, and Hagia Sophia now works as a mosque. Check current visiting hours on the official sites, dress modestly, and carry a scarf. Plan your own solat at the hotel or a nearby mosque.

What should we confirm before we book?

Confirm the flights, the hotels, the domestic flight, the meal plan and the daily prayer breaks in writing. Ask whether a hotel serves alcohol in the dining room. Our guide to alcohol in Turkish hotels shows what to ask for.
