Eight days in Sri Lanka for a group
You are holding a group together, and every transfer must leave room for solat and a proper meal.
This route gives a group eight days across Colombo, Kandy and the south coast, with two long road days kept apart by rest days. It suits a family, a surau or an office group with elders, because every travel day is followed by a gentler one. Check each day’s prayer windows on your app, since they shift through the year.
Who is this route for?
It is for an organiser who must keep ten or twenty people fed, rested and on time. It also works for three generations in one family. It is a planning outline, not a booking, and any meal you plan is unconfirmed until you see a certificate.
Muslims make up a minority in Sri Lanka. Pew Research Center estimated 8.5% in 20104. So plan your prayer and meal stops in advance instead of counting on one at every turn.
The route at a glance
- Day 1: Arrive in Colombo and rest.
- Day 2: Colombo at an easy pace, with a seafront evening.
- Day 3: Road to Kandy, a long day.
- Day 4: Kandy sights, then a slow evening.
- Day 5: Return towards the coast, the second long day.
- Day 6: Galle Fort and a short beach hour.
- Day 7: Rest day on the south coast.
- Day 8: Transfer to Colombo and fly home.
What do Malaysians need to enter?
Malaysians must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving, and the visa is free1. The free entry allows a stay of up to 30 days2. Rules change, so check the official page before you fly, and do it for every member of the group.
Malaysia Airlines lists Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport among its destinations from Kuala Lumpur3. Sri Lanka is 2.5 hours behind Malaysia5, so set your prayer app to local time when you land. In an emergency, police are on 119 and ambulance on 1106.
Day by day
Day 1: Arrive and settle
Land at Colombo, clear immigration slowly and let the group collect bags together. Go straight to the hotel. Pray whichever solat is due in the rooms, then rest.
For dinner, keep it near the hotel. Ask the front desk who runs the kitchen and whether it holds a certificate. If it does not, order rice with vegetables or fish and treat it as pork-free (no pork on the menu, but the kitchen and suppliers are not checked by a halal body).
Day 2: Colombo, gently
Spend the morning in the old market district, where the streets are narrow, and finish before the heat peaks. Return for Zohor at the hotel. In the afternoon rest, then walk the seafront green after Asar.
Lunch is the meal to check. Ask a restaurant to show its certificate, name the issuing body and say if it covers this branch. If you cannot get an answer, go to your fallback.
Day 3: Colombo to Kandy
Plan most of the day for this transfer. Ask the driver for a stop near Zohor at a mosque you have marked, and a second break for tea and a rest. Keep elders seated near the front and keep luggage out of their reach.
Arrive in Kandy before Maghrib and pray at the hotel. Eat a simple dinner and sleep early.
Day 4: Kandy
Visit the main temple area and the botanical gardens in the morning, when it is cooler. Come back for Zohor and a long lunch. Dress modestly for temple grounds and carry something to cover your head and shoulders.
After Asar, walk by the lake. This is a good evening to share a meal as a group, so pick one place with a certificate you can read.
Day 5: Back towards the coast
This is the second long day, so start after Subuh and breakfast. Stop for Zohor on the road, then keep the afternoon free. If the group is tired, split the drive across two nights.
Day 6: Galle Fort and the beach
Walk the fort walls in the morning, pray Zohor at the hotel and rest. Take a short beach hour late in the afternoon. Choose a quiet cove or a hotel with a private pool slot, and ask if women-only swim times are possible.
Day 7: Rest day
No transfers. Offer an optional short outing for those who want one, and let the rest sleep or pray. Use the day to wash clothes and repack.
Day 8: Home
Pray Subuh in your room, eat breakfast you have already checked and leave for the airport in good time. Confirm the transfer with the driver the night before.
Where should the group stay?
Use one base in Colombo near the airport side, one in Kandy and one on the south coast. Choose areas, not names, and ask each hotel for a room with a clear qibla direction, which is the direction you face to pray. A family room set beside the elders saves a lot of walking.
How to adjust the plan
- Shorter: remove the south coast and stay two nights in Kandy.
- Slower: add a night at each base, which removes the second long day.
- With children: move the beach hour to the middle of the stay and keep the road days short.
- For a surau group: ask the driver for a bus with space for prayer mats.
What to confirm in writing
Ask the agent or driver to write down the prayer stops, the hotels, which meals are certified and which are only pork-free. Our vehicle and guide fit guide shows what to ask for a larger group. Read Sri Lanka halal certification guide before you choose lunches.

Common questions
Is eight days enough for Colombo, Kandy and the south coast?
Eight days works if you accept two long road days and no more than one major sight per half-day. Colombo and the south coast are far apart, so a group with elders should not add a fourth base. If time is short, drop the south coast and stay longer in Kandy.
How do we handle prayer on long drives?
Ask the driver to plan two stops on each long day, one near Zohor and one near Asar, and to mark mosques on the route before you leave. Keep a travel prayer mat and a water bottle in the bus. Whether to shorten or combine prayers is a question for your own ustaz.
Can we trust a restaurant that says it is halal?
Treat the claim as unconfirmed until you see a certificate or know who runs the kitchen. Ask who issued it, whether it covers this branch and when it expires. Our Sri Lanka certification guide explains the issuing body and what a valid certificate looks like.
Is the south coast suitable for a modest group?
Yes, with planning. Choose a quiet cove or a hotel with a private pool slot, ask about women-only swim times, and keep beach hours short. Some beachfront restaurants serve alcohol, so check seating and the menu before you reserve.
What do we need to book first?
Book the vehicle and driver first, then the three hotels, since they fix the route. Apply for the travel authorisation for every member early. Then ask for meals and prayer stops to be written into the itinerary, not promised by voice.
