Which Asian countries make halal meals easiest
Every list of top halal countries skips the question of what proof you can actually get.

The easiest country for halal meals is the one where you can obtain the strongest evidence at the table, not the one with the most famous halal restaurants. Here we group destinations by that evidence. The groups below are not a numbered ranking, because the order depends on how strict your own meal line is.
What does “strongest evidence” mean?
A certificate from a body JAKIM recognises is stronger than a Muslim-owned venue, which is stronger than a pork-free menu. A country where a single authority issues the certificates is easier to verify than one where you must look up a list of bodies. Our five halal claim states explain the levels.
How do the groups look?
| Group | Destinations | What you can obtain | Still unchecked |
|---|---|---|---|
| One national authority | Singapore, Indonesia | A certificate from the authority | Whether it covers this branch and kitchen |
| More than one recognised body | Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, Philippines, Turkiye, China | A certificate from a listed body | Which body, and whether it is current |
| One recognised body | Thailand | A certificate from that body | Everything else is declared or Muslim-owned |
| Not named here | Any other destination | Open JAKIM’s current list and search | Unknown until you do |
Which countries sit in the strongest group?
JAKIM recognises Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) as the authority for Singapore1. For Indonesia it recognises BPJPH, under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, as the authority2. When one recognised authority covers a country, a certificate has a single place to be checked.
Which countries rely on more than one body?
Japan has six recognised bodies3. Vietnam has five4. Taiwan has two, THIDA and THCD5, and South Korea has two, KMF and KHA6.
The Philippines has two, IDCP and HDIP7. Turkiye has two, KASCERT International and GIMDES8.
China’s list includes bodies such as Shandong Halal Certification Service and the Linxia Halal Food Certification Centre9. In each country, the task is to match the issuer on the certificate to the list.
What changes for Thailand and Japan?
Thailand has one recognised body, the Central Islamic Council of Thailand in Bangkok10. That is a single place to check, but it does not tell you which venues on your route hold a certificate.
Japan’s tourism body says there is no central agency for halal accreditation, so you check each provider’s claims11. Recognised bodies exist, but the system leaves the checking to you.
Why does the list need a date check?
JAKIM states a foreign body’s appointment is valid for three years, after which it carries out a review audit12. That is why a body that was recognised last year may not appear next year. Open the current list before you rely on any name here.
What should I ask at the table?
- “Which body issued your halal certificate, and what is the expiry date?”
- “Does it cover this branch and this kitchen?”
- “Is any dish cooked with alcohol, lard or cooking wine?”
- “Are meat and sauces bought from certified suppliers?”
If the answers are vague, treat the venue as unknown.
Your next step
Pick two countries from the groups above and read their guides in choosing where to go. The guide to JAKIM-recognised foreign certifiers shows how to read the list. Then put your real quotes into the meal-assurance comparison tool.
If your family is torn between two countries on halal grounds, send us your meal line and the two names and we will help you check each one against it.
Common questions
Is there one country where halal is simply safe to assume?
No. Even where an authority regulates halal, a particular venue's certificate still needs to be seen, in date and covering the kitchen you are eating from. The strongest country is the one where the evidence is easiest to verify, not the one where you can stop asking.
Why not rank by the number of halal restaurants?
Counts come from different sources, count different things and change fast. A large number of restaurants without a recognised body behind them tells you less than a small number you can verify. Evidence you can obtain is the fairer comparison.
Does a national authority mean every restaurant is certified?
No. It means there is a recognised body that issues certificates, so a venue's claim can be checked against it. Plenty of venues in any country are not certified. Treat anything without a visible certificate as unconfirmed.
Where does Japan sit, since it has no central agency?
Japan has six JAKIM-recognised bodies but no single accreditation agency, so evidence is gathered venue by venue. It sits in the group where certificates exist but each one must be checked against the list.
How should I use this if my family differs on how strict to be?
Agree your meal line first, using the five claim states. A family that accepts Muslim-owned venues can use any group. A family that wants certificates will find the first two groups easier to plan around.
