Comparing Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan tours

Silk Road tours look romantic on paper, and you need to see how routes and flights really differ.

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan tours both use the Silk Road name, yet the cities, flights and walking differ a great deal. Compare the day-by-day route first, then the meals and the heritage visits. Older parents need the pace and hotel changes in writing before the price.

How do the two countries differ for a tour?

Uzbekistan tours are usually built around historic cities. The Ulugh Beg Madrasa at the Registan in Samarkand was built 1417 to 14201, and the Kalyan Minaret in Bukhara in 11272. That means a heritage-heavy trip with a lot of walking. Our page on Samarkand and Bukhara shows the local picture.

Kazakhstan routes can pair a big city such as Almaty with outdoor days. Pew Research Center estimated Muslims at 56.4% of Kazakhstan’s population in 2010, a figure it later noted was understated against the 2009 census share of 70.2%3. Read Almaty for the city side.

How do I compare flights and transfers?

Ask these before you pay:

  • “Does the price include internal flights, and who books them?”
  • “What happens if a flight or train changes?”
  • “How many hotel changes are there, and how long is the longest transfer?”

For a method, use our guide to reading a tour’s pace. If a quote gives no hours, treat the legs as unknown.

What about entry rules?

Malaysian MOFA states a 30-day visa-free regime for Malaysian citizens in Uzbekistan has applied since 10 February 2018, counted from date of entry4. It also states Malaysian passport holders enjoy visa-free travel to Kazakhstan for up to 30 calendar days5. Check both official pages before you fly, since rules can change.

What should I verify about halal food?

A Muslim-majority country does not mean every kitchen is certified. Ask for named venues and the claim state of each. Our guides on Central Asia halal assumptions and what halal means on Central Asia tour meals go further, and Turkey versus Uzbekistan shows how much you can assume.

Common questions

Is an Uzbekistan tour the same as a Kazakhstan tour?

No. Uzbekistan tours usually centre on the historic Silk Road cities, while Kazakhstan routes can pair a big city with mountain or steppe days. The heritage, the pace and the transfers differ, so compare the day-by-day plan, not the country label.

Are Silk Road tours hard on older parents?

They can be. Heritage sites mean walking on uneven ground, and transfers between cities can be long. Ask for a written rest plan and the number of hotel changes, and decide whether a shorter route suits your parents better.

How do I compare flights on a Central Asia route?

Ask whether the quote includes internal flights or overland transfers, who books them and what happens if one changes. A route that joins cities by air has different risks from one that uses road or rail. Get the legs in writing.

What should I check about halal meals?

A Muslim-majority country does not mean every kitchen is halal-certified. Ask for the venue and claim state of each meal and what is served in the hotel. Our guide to Central Asia halal assumptions lists what to verify.
