Comparing Muslim tours with Xi'an and Xinjiang
A tour joins Xi'an's Muslim Quarter with Xinjiang, and you need to know what to verify first.
A tour that joins Xi’an and Xinjiang is a long route, so compare the Muslim Quarter meals, the number of legs and the entry arrangements before you pay. Muslim-run food is easy to find in Xi’an but is not the same as halal-certified. For Xinjiang, ask the agent in writing which stops need extra entry steps and who handles them.
What does Muslim Quarter food tell you?
It tells you the people running the stall or restaurant are Muslim. That is helpful, because a Muslim cook understands why pork, lard and alcohol matter. It is not the same as a certificate from a recognised body.
Read each meal as one of our claim states: certified, operator-declared, Muslim-owned, Muslim-friendly, pork-free or unknown. Our guide to a Muslim restaurant in China versus a halal claim goes through it. For the word on signs, see what qingzhen means.
JAKIM’s 21 August 2026 list names Chinese bodies including Shandong Halal Certification Service, ARA Halal Certification Services Centre in Henan, Linxia Halal Food Certification Centre in Gansu, Shaanxi Shang Pin Yuan, Halal Certification Services Chongqing and Shanghai Global Halal Certification Service1. If a package says certified, ask which body and whether it is on the list.
How do I compare Xi’an and Xinjiang tours?
| Basis | Xi’an-focused tour | Tour that adds Xinjiang |
|---|---|---|
| Number of legs | Fewer, with shorter transfers | More, with longer transfers |
| Meals to check | Muslim Quarter evenings, hotel breakfasts | The same, plus meals on travel days |
| Prayer | The Great Mosque and hotel | Long days, so a named stop matters more |
| Rest for parents | Easier to build in | Needs a written plan |
| Entry arrangements | Visa exemption | Visa exemption plus questions about each area |
The Great Mosque of Xi’an was founded in 742 CE according to traditional accounts2. Our Xi’an page has the local picture.
How long is the route, really?
Quotes may show a headline number of days without saying how many are travel days. Ask:
- “How many nights are in each city, and how many days are spent mostly in transit?”
- “How are the legs between cities travelled, and where do we pray on those days?”
- “What happens to meals on a long travel day?”
Our guide to reading a tour’s pace shows how to turn the answers into a pace you can judge.
What entry points should I verify for Xinjiang?
Each area on a route may have its own entry arrangements, and these can change. Send the agent these questions and keep the replies:
- “Which stops on this route need any entry step beyond the visa exemption?”
- “Who applies for it, and when?”
- “What happens to the itinerary if an entry arrangement changes?”
Under the China-Malaysia mutual visa exemption in force since 17 July 2025, each stay may not exceed 30 days, with a cumulative limit of 90 days in any 180-day period3. Check the official page before you fly. Read Xinjiang as a destination and who handles visa and entry too.
What else is worth knowing about food?
Do not pack meat. A Chongqing municipal customs FAQ states individuals are prohibited from bringing raw or cooked meat, including offal, into China in baggage4. Check the national customs site for the latest rules.
Which reader should pick which tour?
- Strict halal travellers: the tour with named meals and a certificate you can read, even if it is shorter.
- Mixed-observance families: the one with defined free time, so each person can choose.
- Older parents: fewer legs, and a written rest plan for each long day.

Common questions
Is food in the Muslim Quarter halal-certified?
Do not assume. A Muslim-run stall or restaurant tells you who runs it, not that a recognised body certified it. Ask for the sign or certificate, and the issuing body. The same applies to qingzhen on a sign, which we explain in a separate guide.
Is a long route the same as a better tour?
No. A long route adds transfers, hotel changes and rest needs, and each one is a prayer and meal question. Ask how many nights are in each place and how the legs are travelled. For older parents, fewer stops can be the better trip.
Who checks entry rules for Xinjiang?
You should check the official sources, and also ask the agent in writing which stops need extra entry steps and who handles them. Entry arrangements for some areas can change, so a written answer with a date is worth having.
Can I bring meat snacks into China?
Do not. A Chongqing government customs FAQ states individuals are prohibited from bringing raw or cooked meat into China. Leave sausage, meat-based packets and meat-flavoured snacks at home, and ask the agent which backup foods are fine.
Is the visa-free entry enough for the whole route?
The exemption covers the visa for stays within its limit. Ask the agent whether any stop needs separate paperwork, and who applies. Check the official pages for your dates before you fly.
