Hong Kong halal claims: a method to check them
Hong Kong signs say halal in different ways, and you want a way to sort them.
In Hong Kong, “halal” on a door can mean a certificate, a travel-rating badge, a Muslim owner or just a menu without pork. The five steps below sort them. They work for a restaurant, a hotel breakfast or a shop, and none of them depends on a venue name.
How big is the choice in Hong Kong?
CrescentRating states that Hong Kong ranked third among non-OIC destinations in the Global Muslim Travel Index 2025, with 61 CrescentRating-accredited hotels and 190 halal-certified restaurants1. Pew Research Center estimated Muslims at 1.3% of Hong Kong’s population in 20102.
So choice exists. The numbers do not tell you what each listing means, which is why you check each claim yourself.
What is the five-step check?
- Ask which claim it is. Certificate, accreditation, Muslim-owned, pork-free, or only the word halal.
- Photograph the proof. Capture the issuer’s name, the expiry date and the branch.
- Match the issuer. JAKIM publishes its list as a PDF at halal.gov.my/pdf/cb/FHCB21August2026.pdf3. The list covers 49 countries or regions4, so look for the Hong Kong section and compare the name letter by letter.
- Check the scope. Does the certificate name this branch, and cover the kitchen, sauces and meat?
- Write the claim state. Certified, operator-declared, Muslim-owned, Muslim-friendly, pork-free or unknown.
JAKIM appoints a foreign body for three years and then audits it again5, so use the latest version of the list.
What does each thing you see really mean?
| What you see | What it is | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A certificate with an issuer’s name | Certified, if the issuer matches | Step 3, then expiry and branch |
| A CrescentRating badge | A rating, not a certificate | Ask for the halal certificate as well |
| “Muslim-owned” | Who owns it | Ask about suppliers and alcohol |
| “Halal” with no issuer | Operator-declared | Ask which body, and for a photo |
| “No pork” | Pork-free | Ask about lard, alcohol, shared tools |
If a venue gives you no proof, it stays unknown. Unknown is never the same as halal. Our guide to the five halal claim states explains each label in full.
Where can I pray, and how does that help the check?
Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre at 105 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, opened its current building on 11 May 19846, and the mosque was first established in 18967. It is a fixed point for planning prayer.
Use it as an anchor for your day, and ask the same questions at venues near it. Do not assume that a venue near a mosque holds a certificate.
What if I cannot verify a place?
Choose a fallback you are comfortable with: seafood or vegetarian food with careful sauce questions, or a venue where you can see a certificate. Our meal-assurance comparison tool compares options by your own rule.
The dietary enquiry brief generator writes a message you can send ahead. For the wider trip, read the Hong Kong guide for Malaysians, Taiwan versus Hong Kong for Muslim meals and prayer and the country and city guides.

Common questions
Does a CrescentRating badge mean a place is halal-certified?
Not by itself. CrescentRating is a travel-rating company, and its accreditation is a different thing from a halal certificate. Ask the venue whether it holds a certificate from a halal body as well, and apply the same checks to that certificate.
How do I know whether a Hong Kong issuer is recognised by JAKIM?
Read the issuer's name on the certificate and look for the Hong Kong section in JAKIM's published list of recognised foreign bodies. If the name does not appear there, treat the certificate as one from a body outside JAKIM's list and decide by your own standard.
Is a Muslim-owned restaurant in Hong Kong enough?
It tells you who runs the place, not how the kitchen works. Ask about suppliers, alcohol in cooking and shared equipment, the same as anywhere. Some travellers accept Muslim-owned venues and others want a certificate, so decide before the trip.
What do I do if staff cannot answer in English?
Show your questions on your phone, or send a written message before you arrive. If you still get no clear answer, treat the meal as unknown and choose a fallback, such as seafood or vegetarian food with sauce questions, or a venue where a certificate is displayed.
