Mixed hotel pools: ways to swim without mixed use
The hotel pool is mixed, and you still want an hour in the water.
You can get pool time without mixed use, but it usually takes a little arranging. The realistic options are quiet hours, a private pool, a spa pool, or a stay that avoids the problem altogether. Ask the hotel in writing before you book.
Which option fits which traveller?
- You want to swim, and being seen by men matters less than being alone: pick a quiet hour at a shared pool.
- You want to swim without a headscarf or in lighter clothing: pick a private pool or a women-only spa session.
- You travel with children and a mixed family: pick a family pool slot or a villa pool.
- You are comfortable in modest swimwear in a mixed pool: check the pool rules first.
Each person sets their own line here. If you want guidance on what is permitted for you, ask your own ustaz or your state mufti office.
What are the realistic ways to get pool time?
Here they are, from easiest to arrange to most involved.
| Option | What you arrange | What it gives you | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off-peak hour at the shared pool | Ask the hotel which hours are quietest | Fewer people, not none | Pool opening hours and any closures for cleaning |
| Women-only session | Ask whether one exists at the hotel or spa | A set time for women | Is it a pool, a spa pool or a plunge pool? Who supervises? |
| Spa pool or plunge pool | Book a spa treatment or a session | A small pool, sometimes screened | Whether women can book it alone |
| Private pool in a room or villa | Book a room type with a pool | Full control of who is there | The wall, balconies and staff access |
| A stay with a beach and no pool | Choose a quiet bay or a resort beach area | Open water, no shared pool | How exposed the beach is |
How do I find quiet hours?
Quiet hours are not printed in listings, so you ask.
Send the hotel this message: “We would like to use the pool at a quiet time. Which hours are the least busy, and are there any hours reserved for women or families? Please also tell us whether the pool closes for cleaning.”
Ask about the day of arrival too, because a quiet hour on a weekday may not be quiet at a weekend.
What about the spa?
Some hotels attach a spa pool, steam room or plunge pool to the spa. These can be smaller and can be booked with a treatment.
Ask three things: who else uses it, whether a women-only slot exists, and whether the area is screened from corridors and windows. A spa pool that is open to a public walkway is not the same as a private one.
When does a private pool make more sense?
If you want the pool to yourself, a private pool is the stronger answer, though it costs more and needs checking. Our guide on questions about private pool visibility shows how.
What should the hotel confirm in writing?
Ask for the pool opening hours, the quiet hours, any women-only session, and any closures during your stay. Keep the reply on your phone. The guide on which arrangements to confirm in writing lists the points worth saving.
Your next step
Note your own line in the private-stay requirements builder, then send the message to each hotel you are comparing. Common questions
Is a women-only pool common in Asian hotels?
Do not count on one. City and resort hotels tend to run a single pool for everyone. Women-only sessions exist at some places, usually at a spa, a ladies' floor or a specific hour. Ask in writing, because a hotel that says it has one may mean a certain time slot only.
What time is best for a quiet pool?
Ask the hotel, because it depends on the property. Early morning and the hour after check-out tend to be calmer than the afternoon. Meal times can also empty the pool. Check with the front desk, and compare it with your own prayer windows.
Can I ask the hotel to close the pool for me?
You can ask, but a shared pool rarely closes for one guest. A better request is a quiet-hour window, a pool towel booking, or access to a smaller spa or plunge pool. Hotels agree more readily to a clear, small request than a large one.
Will a burkini solve the problem of mixed pools?
It may solve what you wear in the water, but not who else is there. Some travellers are comfortable in modest swimwear in a mixed pool, others are not. That is a personal choice, and the pool rules for modest swimwear are worth checking first.
