Narita and Haneda prayer rooms, terminal by terminal

You land in Tokyo tired, and you want to know which terminal has somewhere to pray.

Haneda lists its prayer rooms by terminal, and the terminals are not equal. One has none, one has rooms on both sides of security, and one has rooms before security only. Narita keeps its own list, which you should read for your terminal before the flight. Here is how to plan around both.

Which Haneda terminal has a prayer room?

Match your terminal and the side of security you will be on.

TerminalPrayer rooms listedWhere
Terminal 1None1The official site lists no room
Terminal 2Two, general area23F International
Terminal 2Two, airside32F International
Terminal 3Two, general area43F

“General area” means before security and immigration. “Airside” means after you have passed through. Haneda’s information is volatile, so check the official page close to your date.

Malaysia Airlines lists Narita and Haneda among its Tokyo destinations from Kuala Lumpur5. Your ticket will name the airport and terminal, so look it up on the booking.

What does Haneda say about wudhu?

The airport states that its prayer rooms have facilities for physical cleansing before worship6. That is all the page says. Do not assume a row of wudu taps. Bring a small towel and a bottle, and expect to use a basin if needed.

For other airports and train stations, see wudhu at airports and train stations.

How do we plan Haneda by the situation?

  • Arriving at Terminal 1: pray after you leave, at your hotel or at a mosque, since no room is listed there.
  • Arriving at Terminal 2 or 3: use a room in the general area before you leave the building.
  • Departing from Terminal 2: you can pray before check-in in the general area, or after security in the airside room, so Zohor or Asar does not need to be rushed at the gate.
  • Departing from Terminal 3: pray in the general area before security. Do not leave it for the gate.

How do we check Narita?

Narita’s information sits on its own official page, so use that rather than a blog. Look at four things:

  1. The terminal your flight uses.
  2. Whether the prayer room is before or after security.
  3. The floor and the nearest landmark or gate.
  4. Whether a separate area for women is mentioned.

If any of these is unclear, send a short message to the airport’s information desk: “We are flying into Narita Terminal [number] on [date]. Where is the prayer room for that terminal, and is it before or after security?”

What if we arrive with older parents or children?

Choose the room closest to your route. After a long flight, a quiet few minutes is better than a walk across the airport. If your parents rely on a wheelchair, ask the airline for assistance and tell the assistant that you want to stop at the prayer room first.

Your next step

Save the terminal, side of security and floor on your phone. Then add the rooms to the prayer-stop itinerary checklist, and open the prayer and daily pacing hub for the rest of the trip. For the city itself, read Tokyo for Muslim travellers.

Common questions

Which Haneda terminal has no prayer room?

The airport's official site lists no prayer room in Terminal 1. If you arrive or depart there, plan to pray at Terminal 2 or 3 if your schedule allows, or pray at your hotel. Check the official page close to your date, because airport facilities are updated.

Can I use a Haneda prayer room before immigration?

Yes at two places on the list. Terminal 2 has two rooms on the third floor international in the general area, and Terminal 3 has two on the third floor in the general area. Terminal 2 also has two airside on the second floor international.

Does Haneda say anything about wudu?

The airport states its prayer rooms have facilities for physical cleansing before worship. It does not give details, so do not assume a full wudu station. Carry a small bottle and a towel, and do wudu at the washroom basin if you prefer.

How do I find Narita's prayer rooms?

Open Narita Airport's official facilities page for your terminal and look for prayer room entries, noting whether each is before or after security. If the page is unclear, message the airport's information desk before you fly, and keep their reply on your phone.

What if I arrive in the early morning with a child who is tired?

Choose the nearest room that is on your route, not the best one. If it is landside, pray before you go through security or before you meet your pick-up. Keep the child's prayer short and keep a snack in your bag.
