Phuket and Krabi beach resorts: modest dress and halal food
Phuket and Krabi both have party beaches, and you want the quieter bays with food you can trust.
In Phuket and Krabi alike, the bay you pick matters more than the province. Judge the beach and the food access area by area before you book.
Which beach suits which traveller?
- You travel with young children and want calm water: look for a smaller bay away from the nightlife area.
- You wear a hijab and want fewer eyes on the beach: pick a quieter end and a resort with a pool you can use.
- You want halal food within walking reach: choose an area with Muslim-owned or certified options nearby, and check the map.
- You like activity and do not mind crowds: a busier bay is fine, with a quiet resort pool as your retreat.
How do I tell a party beach from a quiet bay?
Look at three things on the map.
- Distance from the main nightlife strip: the further, the quieter at night.
- Beach clubs and bars near the sand: a row of them means music and crowds.
- Road access: a bay reached by a narrow road or a boat tends to have fewer day visitors.
Our guide on quiet ends of a beach explains how to read photos and reviews for the same signs. Our Phuket versus Krabi guide lays out the broader differences between the two.
How is halal food around a resort area?
Judge it by claim state, not by a sign alone.
- Certified: Thailand’s recognised body on JAKIM’s list is the Central Islamic Council of Thailand (CICOT)1. Look for a visible certificate and check the issuer and expiry.
- Muslim-owned: a restaurant run by Muslims. It is not the same as certified.
- Pork-free or seafood: no pork on the menu, kitchen and sauces unchecked.
- Unknown: no evidence shown.
Muslims are a minority in Thailand overall, with Pew estimating 5.8% in 20102, so you should check each area instead of assuming. Our guide to reading the CICOT and provincial committee marks shows what to look for on a certificate.
What about the resort kitchen?
A resort that serves breakfast and dinner is the easiest base for meals, but its claim still needs checking. Ask:
- “Is any dish cooked with pork, lard or alcohol?”
- “Can you show a halal certificate, and which body issued it?”
- “Is the halal food prepared in a separate kitchen or with separate equipment?”
Treat an unproven answer as unknown. Use the meal-assurance comparison tool to compare your options.
What about dress and customs?
Beach dress is the resort’s and the bay’s rule. Ask in writing if you plan modest swimwear, and bring a cover-up for walking. Away from the beach, loose, light clothing is comfortable in the heat and covers more.
Your next step
Pick two bays, send each resort the same message, and compare the replies. See Phuket for Muslim travellers and Krabi for Muslim travellers for area detail, and the wider topic in hotels, rooms and privacy.

Common questions
Is Phuket or Krabi better for a modest family beach holiday?
Neither wins for everyone. Both have busy beaches and quieter bays, and halal food access depends on where you stay. Compare the exact bay and its food options rather than the province name.
How do I avoid the party beaches in Phuket?
Look at where the beach sits relative to the main nightlife area. Choose a bay away from it, and check the resort's position on a satellite map. Ask the resort about music, beach clubs and late-night noise near the rooms, since these shape how the stay feels.
Is halal food easy to find near Thai beach resorts?
It varies by resort area. Some areas have Muslim-owned restaurants within reach, others rely on the resort kitchen. Check where the nearest option is on a map, and ask what claim it makes. A halal sign is only as reliable as the body behind it.
What should I wear on Thai beaches as a modest traveller?
Bring a cover-up that you are comfortable swimming and walking in, and light, loose clothing for the town. Beach rules vary by resort and bay, so ask in writing if you plan to swim in modest swimwear. Dress more fully when you visit local villages or temples.
