Flights and meals

Pre-ordering halal flight meals, step by step

Flights are booked, and now you want the meal request not to get lost.

Request the meal as soon as the ticket is issued, then re-confirm it at every handover, and carry a small backup. A halal meal on a flight is a booking request, and requests are easiest to lose where one flight ends and another begins. This timeline puts a check at each of those points.

At booking: what do I note down?

Before you pay, list every flight number, every traveller and every airline. Count a connection on a separate ticket as a separate trip, because the first airline cannot place a request with the second. For each leg, write down who will make the request and how: online booking manager, phone or travel agent. Our guide to first overseas holidays helps if this is your first time packing a family trip.

Right after ticketing: when do I send the request?

Send it the same day. Name each traveller exactly as on the ticket, including children. Ask for a written confirmation, not just a ticked box on a screen.

Use this message with the airline’s contact channel:

“Please arrange a halal meal for each of the following passengers on flight [number] on [date]: [names as on passport]. Please confirm in writing, and tell me the cut-off for changes.”

Before the cut-off: what do I check?

The cut-off is set by each airline and printed on its own special-meal page. Open it, copy the exact wording into your notes, and set a reminder well ahead. If your confirmation has not arrived by then, chase it by phone and ask for a reference you can quote later.

In the days before travel: how do I re-confirm?

Open the booking manager for each leg and check the meal appears next to each name. If you used an agent, ask for a fresh screenshot. This is also the moment to re-read the airline’s description, to see whether the meal wording matches what you accept.

The meal label is an airline category, not a certificate. If you want the whole file in one place, follow which arrangements to confirm in writing.

On connecting flights: where do requests get lost?

At the second leg. A new flight number can mean a new airline system, and nothing promises that the first request carries across, even on one ticket. So re-confirm the connecting leg twice: once when you re-confirm the first, and once at check-in on the first flight, by asking the desk to check the next leg.

On the day: what do I do at the desk and gate?

At check-in, show your confirmation screenshot and ask staff to check the meal appears on each boarding record. At the gate, ask again if the crew change. On board, mention your seat and the request when the first service starts, politely, before the trolley passes you.

What goes in the family checklist?

  • Every adult and child is named on the request.
  • Any allergy or medical diet is noted separately.
  • Each leg has its own confirmation.
  • A sealed non-meat snack is in the cabin bag, and parents or older relatives know the plan.

Your next step

Make one page with each flight, each name, the cut-off and the confirmation. Use the meal-assurance comparison tool if you are weighing airlines by how clearly they describe the meal, and see our halal food hub for the rest of the checks.

Send us your route and the number of travellers, and we will set up the one-page list of who to ask for what, and when.

Common questions

When should I request the meal?

As soon as the ticket is issued, because every airline sets its own cut-off and the date is printed on its special-meal page. Put that cut-off in your calendar with a reminder ahead of it. Requesting early also leaves time to fix an error if the airline replies that the request failed.

Do I need a separate request for each family member?

Yes. A special meal is attached to a traveller, not to a booking. Add each adult and child to the request, and tell the airline about any other dietary need at the same time, such as a child's allergy or a parent's medical diet. Check the confirmation lists every name.

What if I booked through a travel agent?

Ask the agent to make the request and send you the airline's written confirmation, not just a verbal assurance. Then check it yourself in the airline's booking manager if the system allows. If the agent cannot show proof, make the request directly with the airline.

Do I request again on the return flight?

Yes. Treat each flight number as its own request and re-confirm the return after the outbound has gone well, not before. Writing every leg in one list saves you from assuming a request carried forward when it did not.
