Booking a hotel abroad in Ramadan or Raya
You are fasting away from home and need breakfast before dawn and a table at sunset.
A hotel can support fasting if you ask three things early: can sahur be served before dawn, is the iftar set for breaking the fast, and are the quiet hours kept at night. Send the questions in writing before you book, and keep a fallback for each.
When is the fasting month?
A travel blog expects Ramadan 2027 to begin on Monday, 8 February 2027, with dates confirmed only after moon sighting by JAKIM and state religious authorities1. The 2027 federal holiday schedule lists Hari Raya Puasa on 10 and 11 March 2027, marked subject to change pending moon sighting2. These dates can move, so check the official announcement before you fly.
How do I ask for sahur?
Sahur is the meal before dawn. A standard breakfast usually starts too late. Ask whether the hotel can prepare it earlier, as a boxed meal or a tray in your room.
Send this: “We are fasting. Can you provide a meal before dawn, and tell us what it contains?” For breakfast value in general, see is hotel breakfast worth paying for.
What about iftar?
Some hotels advertise an iftar buffet. The first question is whether it is set for breaking the fast at sunset, with dates and an opening time, or is just a late dinner under a new name.
Then ask about the food: pork, alcohol in cooking and where the meat comes from. Use the halal claim states to read the answer. If it is unknown, pick another meal.
What if the hotel cannot help?
Use a room with a small fridge and a kettle. A fridge and microwave let you keep dates, fruit, yoghurt or a packed meal for sahur and iftar. See fridge and microwave in the room for what to ask.
Check kettle rules too, since some hotels restrict them. Travelling with a rice cooker or kettle explains the plug and voltage side.
What about quiet hours and prayer?
Ask whether the hotel keeps the corridor quiet at night, since some families wake early for sahur. If you pray tarawih at a mosque, ask how far the nearest one is on foot and whether the evening walk is lit and flat. Plan a quiet room for rest between Zohor and Asar if the day is long.
What about Hari Raya abroad?
Raya morning is a prayer first, then a meal. Ask the hotel whether breakfast can be served later on the morning, and whether a quiet room is available. If you are flying around the holiday, read Raya and school-break flights for queues and baggage.

Common questions
Can a hotel serve breakfast before dawn for sahur?
Some can, but it needs to be arranged. Ask whether the hotel can prepare a boxed meal, open the restaurant early or place a tray in your room the night before. Confirm the arrangement by message, and ask what the meal contains, since a standard buffet may not suit your standard.
How do I know the iftar spread is suitable?
Ask whether it is set for breaking the fast at sunset or is simply a late dinner. Then ask about pork, alcohol in cooking and how the meat is sourced. Treat an uncertain answer as unknown, and use the halal claim states to decide by your own standard.
Should I book near a mosque during Ramadan?
If you plan to pray tarawih at a mosque, yes, a hotel within easy walking distance saves effort when you are tired. Ask the hotel how far the nearest mosque is on foot and whether the walk is lit and flat in the evening.
