How do I read a halal certificate?

A certificate is framed by the door, and you want to know what it actually proves.

A halal certificate is written proof from a halal certification body that a business met its standard. It is the strongest claim on the halal ladder, but only if you can read it and know who issued it.

How will I meet it on the trip?

You will see it framed at a restaurant, printed on packaging, or quoted by a tour operator in a brochure. A photo of a certificate also travels easily on messages, which makes it simple to ask before you go.

What should I read on it?

  • The business name and address: does it match where you are, or the branch named on your itinerary?
  • The issuing body: is it a body JAKIM recognises for that country?
  • The dates: is it still valid today?
  • What it covers: the whole kitchen, or only certain products?

Why is a logo not enough?

In Malaysia, only JAKIM, MAIN or JAIN can issue the Malaysian Halal Certification and permit the official halal logo1. JAKIM also says logos issued by anyone else are invalid, and that “Muslim Choice” is not a recognised halal label2.

Abroad, the same caution applies: a logo is only as good as the body behind it.

A tip before you pay for a tour

Ask the operator for the certificate details of each meal venue in writing. Our guide on questions to ask a tour operator about halal meals gives the wording, and the meal-assurance comparison tool lets you compare the answers you receive. Where certificates are missing, our claim states guide explains what each lesser claim means.

JAKIM-recognised body, pork-free and lard are explained in the halal terms hub.

Common questions

Is a halal logo the same as a halal certificate?

No. The certificate is the document naming the business, the issuing body and the dates. A logo is only a symbol, and anyone can print one. Ask to see the certificate or take a clear photo of it, then check who issued it.

What if the certificate has expired?

Treat the claim as unconfirmed until the venue shows a current one. An expired certificate may simply be waiting for renewal, but you cannot tell from the wall. Ask politely for the new date, or choose another place that can show a valid certificate.

Does one certificate cover every branch?

Not necessarily. A certificate names a specific business and can be limited to one address or kitchen. Check that the name and address match where you are standing, and ask whether a second outlet of the same brand has its own certificate.
