Dubai hotels: halal by default, what needs checking?
Everyone says Dubai is easy for Muslims, but you want to know what the hotel itself offers.
Dubai starts from a better position than most cities for a Muslim traveller, because food and surroundings are planned around a large Muslim population. That is a starting assumption, not a promise from any hotel. Alcohol, pools and beach areas are the three parts that still vary, so those are the ones to check.
Why does Dubai start from a halal assumption?
Pew Research Center estimated Muslims at 76.0% of the UAE’s population in 20101. That is an older figure, but it explains why hotel kitchens and room-service menus are built with Muslim guests in mind.
A starting assumption is useful for planning. It is not a certificate, and it does not cover every outlet in a large hotel. For what the municipality oversees and what it does not, read Dubai halal rules for restaurants.
What still varies from hotel to hotel?
| Area | Why it varies | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol | A hotel can run bars or licensed outlets on site | Which outlets serve it, and which floor or lift they share |
| Pool | Each hotel sets its own rules | Mixed hours, a ladies-only time, a private area |
| Beach | Public beach and hotel beach differ | Private to guests, screening, swimwear rules |
| Breakfast and dining | Individual outlets and suppliers differ | Which restaurant, and who runs it |
How should you check alcohol?
A hotel that serves alcohol can still suit you, depending on where it is and how you want to eat. Our guide on hotels with a bar helps you decide by your own standard.
For the room itself, choosing a floor and emptying the minibar lists what to request. Send it before you arrive.
What about pools and beaches?
Pool and beach rules are a common source of surprise for families, because they differ more than the food does. Our guide to alcohol and mixed pools in Dubai hotels covers the questions in detail.
What should the pre-booking message say?
Ask only about what differs. A reply can then be short, and you can compare two hotels side by side.
- Which restaurants serve alcohol, and are any on the breakfast floor?
- Is the pool mixed, and is there a ladies-only time or area?
- Is the beach private to guests, and are there screened areas?
- Can the minibar be emptied before arrival?
- Is there a prayer mat, and which wall faces the qibla?

Common questions
Does halal by default mean I can skip checking a Dubai hotel's food?
It means you can start from a better position than in most cities, not that you can skip the check. Hotel outlets differ, and a specific restaurant may serve alcohol or cater to guests with other needs. Ask about the exact outlets you plan to use.
Do Dubai hotels all have mixed pools?
Pool rules are set by each hotel, so some are mixed and some offer separate hours or areas. Ask in writing whether there is a ladies-only time or a private area, and confirm it at check-in. Our guide to alcohol and mixed pools in Dubai hotels covers the questions.
Will a hotel in Dubai remove alcohol from the minibar?
You can ask politely, before you arrive and again at check-in. Hotels that stock a minibar can usually set it up without alcohol if asked early. Photograph the empty minibar for your records, and ask for a room away from any bar if that matters to you.
Is the beach at a Dubai hotel suitable for a hijab-wearing traveller?
It depends on the hotel and the beach. Some beaches are open to the public and busy, and some belong to the hotel and are quieter. Ask whether the beach is private to guests, whether there are screened areas, and what swimwear rules apply.
