Festive planning

Flexible or non-refundable around Ramadan and Raya

The cheaper fare cannot be changed, and the Raya date is not final until the moon is sighted.

Pay for flexibility only on the parts of the trip that can move with the moon. Keep the cheaper fixed price for the parts that cannot. A mix of both is the sensible answer for a family trip.

Which parts of a festive trip can move?

Hari Raya and the start of Ramadan depend on moon sighting, so the public holiday and the family dates around it can shift by a day. A published 2027 holiday schedule lists Hari Raya Puasa on 10 and 11 March 2027, marked subject to change pending moon sighting2. A travel blog expects Ramadan 2027 to begin on 8 February 2027, with dates confirmed only after moon sighting by JAKIM and the state religious authorities1. Check the official announcement before you fly.

What about school calendars?

School dates can sit close to Raya. One calendar publisher, citing the KPM 2027 academic calendar, prints the Kumpulan B school break as 6 to 14 March 20273. That break overlaps the expected Raya dates, so demand for flights and hotels will be high. Confirm your own state group against the official KPM circular, because the source here is a secondary site.

How do I decide what to make flexible?

Part of the tripMoves with the moon?Suggested choice
Outbound flightYes, by a dayFlexible or a low-fee change
First hotel nightYesFree cancellation or change
Tour start dateYesAsk the operator for a date change fee
Return flightLess soCheaper fare may do
Attraction ticket for a fixed dateNoNon-refundable is fine

How much is flexibility worth?

Compare the price difference with the cost of changing a fixed booking. Ask the supplier what a date change would cost, and what the flexible price adds. If the change fee is close to the price gap, the flexible fare is safer for little extra. If the gap is large, think about booking the fixed fare for the part that does not move.

When does a non-refundable booking make sense?

When the date is firm for you, for example school or office dates that will not move, and the festive date does not affect the plan. It also makes sense when the supplier has told you in writing what a change would cost and you are happy to accept it.

What should I ask before paying?

Use the list in cancellation questions to ask before paying a tour deposit, and make sure the seller holds a licence; see how to check a Malaysian travel agency licence. Put the quotes side by side with the Muslim-tour inclusion comparator. For a first trip abroad with children, choosing a first overseas holiday as a Muslim Malaysian covers the destination side. The booking hub has the other checks.

Common questions

Is a flexible booking always worth the extra cost?

No. Pay for flexibility on the parts that can move: the flights, the first hotel night and the tour start date. Parts that do not move, such as an attraction ticket for a fixed date, rarely need it. Ask the supplier which parts a change fee applies to.

When are Ramadan and Hari Raya dates confirmed?

After moon sighting by JAKIM and the state religious authorities. Published calendars give expected dates only. Treat any booking made earlier as a plan with one or two days of uncertainty, and check the official announcement before you fly.

What if I only need a one-day shift?

Ask whether the supplier lets you move the date by a day without a full change fee. Some airlines and hotels have a lighter option for a small shift. If a one-day move is all you need, a middle-priced fare may suit you better than the lowest-priced or the most flexible.

Do school holidays change the answer?

Yes, if your children are in school. A school break can start or end around Raya, and prices rise when families travel at the same time. Check the official school calendar for your state group, then decide whether a flexible fare is worth it to protect those days.
