Do hotels ask couples for a marriage certificate?
You are newly married and travelling together, and want to avoid an awkward moment at the desk.
Most hotels never ask. Some do, and the question can feel intrusive when you are tired from a flight. The calm way through is to know when it happens, carry the right documents and settle the question in your booking message.
Where might a hotel ask for proof of marriage?
Hotels differ, and the reasons differ too. A front desk may ask in these situations.
- The booking is made by a local couple, and the hotel follows local rules for guests who share a room
- The names on the booking and the passports do not obviously match
- The couple’s passports show different surnames
- The hotel has a stated policy and applies it to every pair of adults
- A guest asks for something that depends on being a couple, such as a double bed or a connecting arrangement
Rules about couples differ between countries, so check the hotel’s policy page and the official guidance for your destination. For the law of any country, rely on the official guidance.
What should you carry?
Keep these together in one place, with copies on your phone.
- A clear copy of your marriage certificate, with the original left safe
- Both passports, with names matching the booking exactly
- The booking confirmation, showing both names
- Any written reply from the hotel about your arrangement
Never hand over the original certificate to be kept at the desk. Show it, and take it back.
How do you settle it before you arrive?
Put one calm line in your booking message. You are asking about the hotel’s policy, not defending yourselves.
- “We are a married couple. Does the hotel need to see a marriage certificate at check-in, and is a copy acceptable?”
- “Our certificate is in Malay. Is that acceptable, or do you need a translation?”
- “Please note a double bed for two adults on one booking.”
The email template for hotel Muslim facilities shows a polite structure you can reuse. The guide to what to confirm in writing helps you decide what else to put in the same message.
What if the desk asks anyway?
Smile, hand over the certificate copy and the passports together, and wait. Nothing more is needed. If the desk asks for something unusual, ask for the hotel’s written policy and say you will check it with the booking site.
If the answer feels wrong, you can ask to speak to a manager. Keep your tone level, and keep your messages. If you cannot resolve it, look at the cancellation terms on your booking before you decide what to do next.
Where do you go next?
Use the private-stay requirements builder to list the room needs you want to confirm at the same time, such as the bed type and a quiet floor. For the wider room checks, see the hotels, rooms and privacy hub.

Common questions
Will every hotel ask for my marriage certificate?
No. Policies differ by hotel, by country and by how the booking is made, and couples are not always asked. Some hotels ask only when a booking is made by a local couple, or when names or documents raise a question. Check the hotel's own policy page.
Should I carry the original or a copy?
Carry a clear copy, plus a photo on your phone, and keep the original safe at home or in your luggage. Most front desks want to see that a document exists, not to keep it. Never leave your original certificate at the desk.
What if my wife and I have different surnames?
This is normal and easy to explain. Make sure the name on each passport matches the booking exactly, and keep the certificate copy where you can reach it. If the desk asks, show the certificate and the passports together, calmly, and nothing more is needed.
What if the certificate is in Malay only?
Ask the hotel in your booking message whether a Malay-language certificate is acceptable or whether a translation is needed. Do not guess. Get the answer in writing, and carry a copy of that reply with the certificate.
