Flight meals on a Muslim tour: ordering and checking

Your first long flight is coming, and the tour booked the seats but said nothing about meals.

You can ask most airlines for a Muslim meal, and it is worth doing early. The request is made under a code, confirmed on your booking, and worth checking again before you fly. This page shows the steps, and what the meal does and does not promise.

Who orders the meal, you or the tour?

The tour may book the flight seats and leave the meal request to you. Ask the operator in writing: “Who submits the special meal requests, and when?” Get the booking reference, so you can check it yourself.

If you booked flights separately, you are the one to order. Do it for each traveller, including children.

What is the code on your booking?

On some airline systems a Muslim meal is requested under the code MOML, short for Muslim meal. You may see it in the confirmation email or on the manage-booking page. Names differ between airlines, so check what yours calls it.

Other special meals have their own codes, such as vegetarian types. If you choose a vegetarian meal as your fallback, check what it contains and read seafood or vegetarian meals as a substitute first.

What does a Muslim meal promise?

It is a meal category the airline offers. It is not the same as a halal certificate you can read. Our halal claim states guide separates certified, declared and unknown. For a flight meal, ask the airline who supplies the meal and what the label means.

If a certificate matters to you, treat the meal as unconfirmed until you have seen one.

How do you confirm it before you fly?

Do these in order.

  1. Find the meal code on each passenger’s booking.
  2. If it is missing, request it through the airline’s page or phone line.
  3. Ask for the airline’s cut-off for special meals, and request before it.
  4. Check again a few days before the flight.
  5. Save the reply or a screenshot.

The meal-assurance comparison tool helps you record this for each leg.

What if the meal does not arrive?

Tell the crew early and politely. Ask what else fits your own standard. Carry a sealed snack so you are not left empty-handed, and check customs rules with bringing halal food from Malaysia.

If you land in Seoul and need a meal and a place to pray, read the guide on Incheon Airport for Muslim travellers.

Your next step

Ask the operator who submits the meal requests, check each booking for the code, and save the answer. For the questions to put to an operator before you pay, see questions to ask a tour operator about halal meals, and for the whole topic visit Muslim tour packages.

Common questions

Does a tour package include the flight meal request?

Not always. The tour may book the seat and leave the meal request to you. Ask the operator in writing who will submit the request, and ask for the booking reference so you can check it yourself on the airline's page or by phone.

What is the Muslim meal code?

On some airline systems a Muslim meal request appears under the code MOML. You may see it on the booking, the confirmation email or the airline's manage-booking page. Names can differ between airlines, so check what your airline calls it and ask them to confirm.

Is an airline Muslim meal halal-certified?

Do not assume so. It is a meal category the airline offers, and the certification or sourcing behind it differs between airlines. Ask the airline what the meal means and who supplies it. If a certificate matters to you, treat the meal as unconfirmed until you have seen one.

Can I request it after booking?

Usually yes, but airlines set a cut-off before departure. Do not leave it until the last day. Ask the airline for its cut-off and request early. A request made late may not be loaded, and you would be given the standard meal.

What if the Muslim meal does not arrive?

Tell the crew early and politely, and ask what else is available that fits your own standard. Carry a sealed snack so you are not left empty-handed. Note the flight and date, and send a short written message to the airline after you land.
