Hotel checks

Halal-certified hotel: kitchen, restaurant or whole building?

The hotel shows a halal certificate, and you wonder which part of the hotel it actually covers.

A halal certificate tells you what an issuer checked, and it says so in the scope line. For a hotel the scope can be a single kitchen, a restaurant or a product line, not the whole building. Read that line first, then the issuer and the expiry date.

What can a hotel certificate cover?

  • One kitchen: the main kitchen only, with room service, the banquet kitchen and the bar outside it.
  • One outlet: a named restaurant, with the breakfast buffet not included.
  • One menu or product line: a halal menu among others.
  • The whole property: possible, but ask for the wording that says so.

Where a hotel restaurant or buffet is only categorised as Muslim-friendly, the Korea Tourism Organization warns it may serve dishes that contain pork3. A certificate with a narrow scope can leave you in the same position at the outlets it does not cover.

How do I read the certificate?

Check four lines in this order.

  1. Issuer. In Malaysia only JAKIM, MAIN or JAIN can issue the Malaysian halal certification and permit the official logo2. For a foreign hotel, ask whether the issuer is on JAKIM’s current list of recognised bodies.
  2. Scope. Which outlets, kitchens or products are named?
  3. Address. Does it match the branch you are booking?
  4. Expiry. Is it after your travel dates?

JAKIM states a foreign certification body’s appointment is valid for three years, after which it carries out a review audit1. If the issuer’s recognition could have changed, ask for a current confirmation.

Which meals fall inside the scope?

Ask for each meal separately, because the answer can differ.

MealQuestion to ask
BreakfastIs the breakfast kitchen the certified one?
Room serviceIs it prepared in the certified kitchen?
Banquet or eventIs it covered, or catered from outside?
Dinner outletIs it named on the certificate?

What do I send the hotel?

“Thank you for sending the halal certificate. Please confirm in writing: (1) which kitchens and outlets it covers, (2) whether breakfast and room service are prepared in the certified kitchen, (3) whether the certificate covers this branch, and (4) the expiry date. Please answer yes, no or unknown for each.”

If the answer is vague, treat that meal as unconfirmed and choose a fallback from your plan. The five halal claim states page shows where unconfirmed sits.

For Dubai, where halal is the default but details still need checking, see Dubai hotels: halal by default, but what still needs checking. After you book, recheck the claim before you fly. The hotels, rooms and privacy hub lists related checks.

Common questions

If a hotel has a halal certificate, is everything inside it halal?

Not necessarily. A certificate states what it covers, such as one kitchen, one restaurant or one product line. Other outlets, room service, banquets and the bar can fall outside it. Read the scope line and ask which of your meals sit inside it.

What is the scope line?

It is the part of the certificate that says which premises, outlets or products are certified. It may name a restaurant, a kitchen or a menu. If the line is missing or very broad, ask the hotel to explain it in writing.

Does the certificate cover this branch?

Ask. A certificate for one property does not automatically cover a sister hotel with the same name. The branch address on the certificate should match the hotel you are booking. If it does not, treat the claim as unconfirmed for your stay.

How can I tell if a certificate has expired?

Look for the expiry date and compare it with your travel date. An expired date, or one that is cut off in the photo, means you should ask for a current copy. JAKIM appoints foreign bodies for three years before reviewing them, so ask whether the issuer is still on its list.

Can a hotel with a certificate still serve alcohol?

It can, in outlets outside the certified scope. This is why you ask about the bar, the minibar and banquet areas separately. Whether that exposure is acceptable is for you and your own ustaz.
